Clipping the wiring in is tricky when you’ve literally no reference points as it’s completely bare. Slowly but surely reading the notes and pictures are guiding where they need to be.

Got the column “mounted” to take the weight off and now just pulling each to their location “ish”.

Found a few on ebay, all from China but who cares 😁 That's so cool!

There is a genuine Honda phone case as well in the cam cover shape, sadly only iPhone.

Small update as I haven’t got near it in ages but have had all the wiring in where it should be.

2F656658-04F2-4BC4-997D-89DFEDF63F69.jpeg

I just have to get the two looms through the bulkhead at either side, then get the above passenger unit into place. I had it all in already and realised I hadn’t connected the cable for the heater control so had to rip it out again.

9C740FC6-8F13-44F4-BA0C-B41F03671351.jpeg

When I looked at the loom it was filthy and couldn’t bring myself to put it onto the body.
All the years dirt as well as waxoyl on the electrical clips would have looked rubbish.

So I decided to just clean everything and am working through it. Not too bad and needs done so don’t mind.

When it’s clean and in it’ll be bolted down and then the dash will go in.

I also got a load of new flanged bolts, which are worth it for all they are.

Get the loom and dash in and then get the Suframe/cradle and wishbones all done and we’re halfway getting there. 👍🏻

I would love an S2K track car, watched so many racing on the Japanese programs. This thing should be great fun when done.

Haven’t been on the site in months,..Becoming a dad recently has slowed this build down a little,.. well a lot,.. but this last 2 weeks I’ve got the bit between my teeth again and have got stuck in.

90% of the dash wiring and motors are done and all wires to the boot / seatbelt motors / rear lights and fuel pump are in place.

Next up is to get the roll hoops and plastics in around the seats (now done).and then to clean up the loom that goes in through the driver side of the firewall and get it all bolted down.

First time I’ve actually wiped the dust off in about 6 months.

Front and rear subframes going next week to get blasted along with all the wishbones and an assortment of other brackets around the car to break up the colour with a bit of contrast.

Thinking gold subframes into silver arms and into new hubs with gold brakes and lines.
Im debating on whether to blast and powder coat the fuel tank also but don’t know yet as it’s not too degregated and sits on top of the rear cradle out of eye view anyway.

a few pictures of the progress in no particular order.

I’ll say this,. Anyone that’s done this from bare shell knows how frustrating it is. You do a few things and then realise you should have done something else before all your well intended efforts and then you have to strip it all back and go again and learn from your mistakes

The loose looking wires here are the ones that clip onto the underside of the dash when it goes in. I was like a bull in a china shop trying to get the dash in but have now decided it will be last as it’s best to have everything tested and running incase I’d have to take it out again.

The tarp here holds 75% of the engine bay loom that is fully cleaned and ready to go.

A lot of work in a job like this. But you'll get there in the end, with a few struggles before its complete but this just makes the end result all the more satisfying and then all the hard times will be forgotten.

Its like when I sail offshore in a small sailing yacht mid Atlantic in winter, wet and cold for days on end waking up every four hours for a four hour watch. When its force 8 and no one feels like eating due to the movement and so noisy you get little sleep, and due to needing to save water your shower consists of using only wet wipes. During the event you say to yourself what am I dong here, will never do this again. But if you ask me now, I likely would do another run.

I think car builds work the same way.

That sailing offshore sounds like an absolute mission, but again,. Satisfying when achieved. Much more sacrifice though so I’ll stop whinging about being in a toasty garage with a few beers 🙈.

Making good progress now and just cleaning up the last bit of the driver side loom to go through the bulkhead.

Wiper motors and scuttle panel in later on this evening hopefully and then onto bolting down the engine bay loom and master cyclinder etc.

Good craic

I took a break from the wiring this last few days as I have a friend nick who is coming down to see me this week and I’m going to study all his mounting points and brackets etc in the bay before I get stuck in to putting the loom down.

spent the last day or so gathering up all the bits that I have split and de-bushed.

I just need to find the rear lower arms and brakes and I think that’s everything.

This is where I got my eyes opened,..
Powder coating is a tad more expensive than I thought lol. I’ve only had one quote and I’m awaiting another but I’d imagine both will probably be in and around the same.

Can’t really see a way round it given the finish and contrast I want so It may just be a necessary expense.

on another note, in trying to lift the roof
Up I managed to neglect where the roof motor was and put it through the window,

You could always do them in POR15. Will last as long or better and you can do it all yourself in a weekend. It's just suspension and chassis bits at the end of the day...

I had thought of the POR15 and it may come to that but really want the running gear (to call it that) to be the special part of the build. As the colour is dark I wanted the contrast to enjoy looking at it / working around it rather than a blur of black on black if you get me. Can you get POR in different colours too?

I think with all of the new bushings/mounts/coil overs/braided lines etc that it could be done so well if done right and am at a bit of a cross roads.

I know a build like this isn’t going to be the cheapest when you’re replacing everything but an extra 1500 odd quid is hard to stomach for just a strip and colour change.

A bit more chewing on it to do yet.

I had also thought of just getting them blasted and then prime and paint myself with cans, but also never done this so not sure how it would come out.
Any advice welcome in this front also,

I have to say, I really don't like or rate POR15 if you're looking for a nice finish. Plus it's not for putting on 'clean' metal.

I have used IC powdercoaters outside Donaghadee / Bangor direction and found them much easier paid than Powdertek.

Personally, seeing as this is a car that will be used, I wouldn't spend time and money just to have a shiny underside. Everything under there will effectively be sand blasted every time you drive it, it won't be shiny very long. And if you get precious about having spent all that time and money on a shiny underside then you won't enjoy the car as you should.

The important thing is protection against corrosion, etc. If you prep and etch prime then POR15 will last a long time and stick to anything. I use it on all wishbones and tie arms on the Hondus and it's outlasted some powder coated bits that looked shiny when they went in but not for long. Plus you can touch in if needed, which you can't with powder coating.

I have some bits that were Xylan coated. That's fantastic stuff, looks great and lasts forever. No idea where you could get that done, and I doubt it would be cheaper than powdercoating.

Powdercoating ultimately looks nicer, it does. POR15 sets to a smooth gloss black.

With POR15 you need to be careful not to get it where you don't want it as you'll never get it off again. Like holes, threads, etc. And your face :joy: 🙈

As far as I know it's only available on black. There is clear too but that's more of a top coat.

You could try doing a small piece somewhere and see what you think. Would only cost you some paint and a brush. If you do get some POR15 then get the six-pack of small cans rather than one big one. You won't need all that much, and once opened they don't last that long.

In fact, I might have one here spare...

I have used TJC powder coating to blast and coat some small parts for the Datsun and found the prices to be cheaper than expected. You could give them check.
