Epoxy mastic 121 goes on bare metal. Can brush or spray it on! Goes on very thin and creates a bond with the metal!

Good to get a bit of feedback on this.
I do not want a sticky waxy coating on the underside anywhere.

The epoxy mastic stuff, what’s the process for this. After blasting the shell it’ll need to be primed more or less immediately,. Does this stuff go over the top of the primer or chipguard and dry hard without any heat softening it?

Every days a school day and that

Epoxy mastic is primer....go for Jotun, 5L delivery for 50ish of eBay (the rust busters 121 or whatever it’s called is actually Jotun rebranded)

You will need to key bare smooth steel prior to application but should be ok after blasting? Use 40 grit paper to key it.

It can be sprayed, but unless you have the chassis on a spit I wouldn’t bother and would paint it with a brush. Spraying it is a bit of an art.

Couple of coats, then seam sealer and finally finish with underseal.

The upol underseal products are fantastic and cost effective.

I would have used upol on my m3 but I had to stay OEM for resale purposes.

Pretty sure epoxy mastic isn't a primer from the spec sheet

Cheers for the advice folks,
Spoke to the guy doing mine and am a bit more comfortable/knowledgeable now.

Just have to finish stripping this wiring as haven’t got near it with work in the last 2 weeks..ish.

It seems never ending and ya can’t help but get frustrated every time you go at it.

Have got back at the car this last week or so and glad to say it is almost ready to go for the next stage.

Such a process getting the loom/dash and everything out and tagged but we’re there.

Get the screen out and take a few stupid broken clips off and she’ll be ready for blasting. 💪🏻

A query for anyone who knows.

Would you remove this horizontal unit that sits behind the seats when blasting the shell or leave it in?

It looks to be bonded in from new around where it’s bolted into the chassis. Is it worth ripping out?

All of the clips and bungs out so just the screen and then we’re good to go.

It’s a bit more fun actually getting to something different now.

Split the gearbox from the main block as well as the manifold and bring it out to my uncle for a full strip drown and updated refurbish.

I want to be totally involved in the strip and rebuild so will add those pics of how worn everything is and if /or not to change bits.

When I get it slotted in with both the blasting guys and the repair and paint of everything well just hit the go button. , I’m hoping it’ll come back pristine and the putting together and more interesting stuff commences. 💪🏻

Gave the car a wash seeing all the good weeeaaaaa we’re getting.

Just read the whole thing, fair play!

I can't wait to have room to tear something apart and never get it back together again.

Final part of I’m hoping.

Still have waxoyl on the underside from bulkhead to rear sills so it needs stripped off.
Haven’t quite got the lift sorted just yet,. so I’m improvising.

Got a load of tyres,..

9F48201A-C5CF-4D30-BCA1-07AFBE9C0079.jpeg

and going to prop it up against the beam,.with the boot area at a 45 Sitting on the tyres.

Beam across the garage should hold it dead on as there’s no weight in it now.

Back to colour choice now,. as blasting only takes 2 days the guy says, so a bit of thinking on that to detract from the mundane stripping of this ****!!!

Another query/advice needed.

As I’m stripping off the waxoyl on the underside I’m finding, what can only be described as, a layer of material similar to what vinyl or cushioned flooring would be like where it bonds to the floor of your house.

It’s an absolute torture to remove and I’m wondering will the blasting take it off or does it need to come off first.

TIA

Heat gun and scraper:worried: it's the only way. Had to do this to my mk2

I think blasters media will just bounce off it

@mark19 , I just cried a little there.

I’m now wondering. If I nicked a hole in it somewhere could I lift it all off, (waxoyl and all on top of it) to save stripping the waxoyl andnthen stripping that stuff too.

Will give that a bash first tonight.

I bought a cheap 10 quid heat.gun and it had a few wee attachments on the end. Ended up using the attachments as a scraper . Gun was done by the end but it worked. Also screwfix nylon sanding pads for grinder work wonders to

Dear but so worth it

Or pay someone else to do it... Only saying... Some things are just not worth doing yourself, life's too short...

Totally agree @svensktoppen
But I should have done that ages ago and I’m this far now so I’ll suck it up and get it done.

The plans changed that much along the way that it was hard to foresee.
