I tracked a car for years, wasn't a S2000, but I'd be wary of spending real money on something. @Arfur, @Astroid and myself had a old Corolla, not a twin cam, that got tracked for years, probably around 7-8 before rust killed it . Cost us £100, that was total not each, to buy originally and we never worried if anything went wrong as the car owed us nothing. Brake pads were less that £10 though it did eat front nearside tyres.

If you're set on a S2000 id say go for it but if you just want something to track go for something with the reputation for being reliable.

An S2000 wouldnt be my first port of call when considering a track car.

If Honda is your choice then I would be leaning towards an Ep3 or even a DC5 as I feel they would offer you more fun on the track and be alot easier managed.

Just my thoughts though ...

I think an S2000 would be fun. rwd, high revving etc. plenty of tuning parts. bombproof too no?

Suppose it would be ... I just thought for a fun track car something nimble and FWD like an Ep3 or DC5 might be more enjoyable.

fine on the road but you want something to scare you on track!

Yea I get that, ive seen a few E46 M3's flying round Kirky and it does look awesome. That being said I was taken out in a track-ish prepped 197 Clio and it still turned my knuckles white!

Brother had one, great motor, and he took it round kirkistown. I don't recall him having any real issues apart from the norm. New brake lines and it needed a gearbox during his ownership are the only things I can think off. Although slower than my ST in a straight line, it was set up perfectly for the track and was a lot faster around it.

Never tracked mine but it saw plenty of fast road use :p ......... they can be prone to seized calipers, so maybe get them reconditioned as heavy braking and caliper temps on track will surely exacerbate the issue. Engines are very very strong provided they have had regular services and oil changes. Do some research on your diff and gearbox oils - the units are robust but some (like Amsoil MTF) operate better at higher speeds on track whilst others don't, which cause some synchro issues after repeated track use if there's already existing wear in the box.

The AP2 had some revised geometry settings which many felt made the car more progressive on the limit and less snappy, these can be applied to the AP1 so if you're using a pre-facelift model look into that. There's some good references to track specific settings here :

Standard seats aren't supportive and seating position isn't great if you're tall. My knees always felt too close to the steering wheel, even after I lowered the seat rails.

Single pot front calipers aren't amazing but a set of lines and decent fluid would probably help them out.

I'd be wanting some sort of roll bar for it or a hardtop at least for the track. Wouldn't fancy rolling it with a soft top and the standard hoops behind your head.

Later cars (06+) have traction control, earlier cars don't. Plenty of mods out there for them and a decent community online for help and advice.

Engine is sublime and the gearshifts feel great. Get one bought. (y)

*being pedantic* the AP2 was the 2.2 available in the USA. All UK cars are AP1 and facelift AP1. '04 on was the facelift with revised settings.

Cheers for all the replies guys.
It's the videos I've watched that make it look such good craic and make me want one. Definitely want the RWD factor as I've had plenty of FWD Hondas already and don't fancy tracking the ATR. Very little for sale here in NI though and for £5k ish they're all aeroplane miles even in the uk. I suppose you just never know what will happen when you start lashing any car round a track regardless of mileage so should I be letting this factor annoy me as much when the budget of 5/6k dictates anyway?
Have been looking for a damaged or cat d one but to no avail so the hunt continues.
There's a video of one racing an m3 round mondello and it looks epic fun,. Proper on the edge.

You'll pay more than 6k for a decent lowish mile example now. As with anything, I'd buy on condition and service record.

Keep an eye on the S2000 Ireland Facebook page for cars for sale here. Never too many pop up though.

Nothing to dicey on this video, but there are a few more that my brother has which would be.

Everyone's going have their opinions on what car they would track etc.... you want an s2000... Do it .. any car around track will be great crack. It's a Honda, loves revving, handles great, reliable and has the added fun off being rwd.

I used my S2000 on the track when i had it. More fun than the GTR and certainly fast enough even standard. A gentleman in a TVR 350C was suitably impressed with it. It was a shame when I excitedly reversed into my mates Honda Beat at one meeting... cringe.
