Been a hot second since I posted on RMS so I thought I'd post a bit of a mega thread of the current daily/project.

Sold the Leon Cupra R in May 2019 for good money, but needed a car to drive, wife had parked her Lupo GTi at a friends farm since she got a spanky new Arona FR, perfect excuse to get the Lupo back on the road after a year, turns out, sitting on a farm for a year does things to a car, it was pretty obvious that this was going to take a lot of work, thankfully, being a VAG parts advisor has its perks

61969305_10161817646020150_2441879312266166272_o_10161817645980150.jpg

62399207_10161817645515150_3549641765491310592_o_10161817645510150.jpg

So I set to work ordering what I could and, but I didn't want to do a half job, so everything that came off got new bolts/nuts as well, car got a full service including a new timing belt and water pump, new coilovers, new discs, new pads, new backing plates

62172227_10161817645290150_317024635768012800_o_10161817645280150.jpg

We discovered that the rear axle either needed a lot of welding to pass MOT or needed replaced, so I went and got one off of a SEAT Arosa, the only difference from that of a GTI is a built in torsion bar on the GTI version, so I got that blasted and powder coated and put some poly bushes in

64244949_10161851545865150_3452666545023483904_o_10161851545855150.jpg

While we were there we changed the brake flexis

64478762_10161851545995150_7652048927239176192_o_10161851545985150.jpg

and replaced the stub axle bolts for titanium replacements since I couldn't source the OE bolts

Car sails through MOT but there is still plenty to be done, so I go in for the deep clean

64228451_10161817651555150_4401282223500689408_o_10161817651520150.jpg

Stip what feels like 10 layers of paint off the calipers

gave them a lovely lick of HT Red for the factory look and the rest of the car got a deep clea

62176043_10161817659355150_8811929056254623744_o_10161817659345150.jpg

not exactly Leonardo DaVinci, but it's better than it was

The car though, ever since we've owned it from 2011 has left black spots of residue over the rear after any drive, we thought this might be exhaust related since it appears the middle silencer has collapsed in on itself so I ordered up a KAM Racing Cat back exhaust

IMG_20190807_112328.jpg

However once fitted it's clear the issue goes deeper, so after some research it appears the valve stem oil seals like to go on GTi's and buy do they ever

74283330_10162388505410150_5890689384679735296_o_10162388505405150.jpg

I send the car to a good friend who strips the head, decarbons everything and replaces the VSOS

74158449_10162388503225150_1064960497075355648_o_10162388503215150.jpg

However after building the car back up the smoking issue hasn't gone away, and the only option is to strip the whole engine down, and find the issue, this turns out to be the piston rings are just shooting oil in to the combustion chambers

72647477_10162388503700150_5906254354750373888_o_10162388503695150.jpg

Went to pick the car up and it's running perfectly, no smoke, definitely gained some power and all is well (LOL) mechanic makes a remark about the rear camber and I brush it off as that's just how they sit.

Well it turns out that is how they sit, when the axle you recently put in to the car has completly rotted from the inside and snapped, right as you park up at work

Right as I reverse in to my spot I hear a knock and get out to see that

Now without a car I need to try and find a rear axle, seemingly impossible in NI right when I'm looking, thankfully my friend still has the old axle, and he likes to weld things, so I send it off for sand blasting and my friend gets to work

It aint pretty but it works and I decide to paint that axle myself instead of powdercoating

75464418_10162459762380150_6036475684400922624_o_10162459762370150.jpg

The steering is also feeling clunky so I sort myself out with a new steering rack and PAS pump

66104681_10161957236835150_8252941360487727104_o_10161957236815150.jpg

Now I can begin to enjoy the car and start buying track related things, however since I'm dailying it I want to enoy that too so I get myself a nice little bluetooth Sony unit

IMG_20191025_123105.jpg

Snag myself a nice little limited edition Sparco R383 Champion wheel

And that pretty much brings us up to the present day after some important purchases

And a cheeky little test fit of the track wheels back in November (Running 20mm spacers it scraped over the smallest bump and the tiniest speed)

It may not be mint, but I can't wait to get it on to the track!
Good to see you posting again mate and been seeing small updates on Facebook etc.

Going to be great on the track!

Thanks mate, hopefully, all going well it'll have its first outing in March

Outstanding work Marcus! That axle gives me the shivers just looking at it, good thing it didn't go when on track! Good to see you posting again too 👍

Would definitely buy another axle if one ever became available giving how bad that one is/was before tracking it

It's fine now, my friend seam welded some parts too to beef it up, not to mention they're literally impossible to get now lol

In fairness, my wife used this for years to go to a farm and everything was caked in mud which can't have helped, still haven't even got all the mud out from underneath it lol

Nearly bought one of these new back in the day - thought they were class looking; scary stuff with back axle.

I adore these wee cars! Always wanted a blue one if it came up. Follow @claytonjoness on Instagram for some amazing Lupo GTi goodness, his is immaculate and well worth a follow.

how do you find the AD08 RS’s for road use? Heard lots of different stories since they updated the compound used and they became the RS.

Already follow him, he's steered me in the right direction on a few things, Advans are purely for the track for me, stuck them on for half a day just to see what they were like, and with the 20mm spacers on the back it scraped like mad so took them back off (and will be running no spacers on the track)

Lupo made it to its first every track day on Sunday, other than boiling the OE PAS fluid the car was faultless, quickest time of the day was a 1:16.0 of the ones we timed, and I'm left with a need for a LSD in future, but the car was immense fun, great all round and soaked up all the kerb abuse I was giving it 😀
