New cars are dicks.

I drive a 2004 car with the 1.9 TDI PD engine and there’s none of this oul crap to worry about. It’s great.
They were fantastic, regular services and they went forever. Modern diesels just aren’t worth the hassle imo

I sold my last one there with 383000 miles on it and still going strong, original engine, original clutch and flywheel, original turbo. It needed a windscreen, timing belt and pump and a couple of suspension bits so I couldn’t justify keeping it and got £300 for it. I’ve just replaced it with another with 140000 miles on it. I plan to take it to atleast 250000 miles again before thinking of a replacement. Unreal cars, never ever miss a beat and I oil change them every 8K miles with air and fuel filter done every 3 oil changes.

100% agree with the above. My Father in law took his a4 avant to 260k and it was still going nicely - though I reckon the turbo had lost the will to live through such infrequent use. Never saw anything north of 55mph, his mpg was off the scale!!

I have a 1.6 diesel yeti that has a hunger for injectors - next one needs replaced, the great irony of the Sharan was that it was bought from a dealer for the warranty as I had a dose of an XC90 before had that crippled me financially.

im so pissed off that I forgot to renew my VW warranty when it ran out at the end of June, it was something like £45 a month.

mind you I’m getting this fixed then taking it out again!

With there only being a couple of weeks in it I'd get in touch with them and ask for advice. If it's through VW themselves then they may offer some sort of goodwill or reduction on labour costs / warranty rate. Especially if you are offering to extend the warranty further.

I’ll have a go at that, but was sent details of a chap who diagnosed an issue with a pals A7, he said he can have a look on Monday.

The whole issue is compounded by a ferry booking with a cabin on Thursday morning that I kind of need to make, there isn’t a sailing with a free cabin thereafter and I am not spending 4 hrs in the company of the great unwashed trying to entertain our 4 kids.

Unfortunately the legislation dictates that the vehicle must react the way it does - it’s seen as fundamental to its operation as NOx emissions are so much higher without the system

If you get to somebody with VCDS etc it’s likely they can run the reset routine which forces the system to run the diagnostic again - doesn’t mean it will pass but helps give it the chance

Yours is a year younger than one of mine and 2 years younger than my other one ya flash hoor lol. Yep, you can't beat them. First click of the starter every time.

I would happily clutch at that straw to get me to Dorset. I’ll be house-sitting my sister-in-laws place and would happily have it sorted whilst over. We will see what running it through decent diagnostics picks up on Monday.

😂😂

It’s all you need. My toys are 1985, 1989 and 2006 so I know all about older car ownership.

1.9 TDI PD 130 engine is the best diesel car engine ever produced in my opinion.

You will struggle with resets on that earlier scr system. Part of the reset on the Vw diagnostic system is to actually carry out a regen and scr efficiency test.

It's quite common for the scr cat to break down due to becoming saturated with adblue from a leaking injector.

So recently the British Standards were updated in regards to storing of adblue. If it is left say out the front of a garage that gets the sun it can cause the urea to decompose and render it less effective but I doubt this is your problem to be honest. Most likely a faulty Nox sensor.

No problem - I’m involved in engineering the system and calibrating how it operates, I may know a little about it

Slightly related but not. What’s the story with the Jaguar SCR catalyst system my fathers car had to go in a year or so ago with a Adblue fault after being filled up at the dealer. After a bit of research it seemed to be particularly common in the Ingenium engines. Was there a TIS or an update? Also started seeing on forums Halfords advising not to use their Adblue on JLRs which was strange also.

I wondered If Jaguar set the parameter for Nox reduction too high to meet Euro 6? Meaning under certain conditions that would throw a fault even if the system was working correctly and that outside elements had resulted in insufficient Nox reduction rather than a faulty SCR?

Edit: It was my understanding that under Euro 6 all diesels due to the combustion process and subsequent the high Nox levels are required to run from cold and isn’t dependant on engine load/temperature. Is this not the case? Apologies for the interrogation but curiosity has me well em... curious!

Adblue runs a very specific dilution rate - 32.5% to be exact, many "Adblue" mixtures are arent close to this even though it says on the packaging that they are. Many things such as sunlight, moisture and even as far as a container lying open to atmosphere WILL have an effect on the quality.

I read some of the comments there, whoever made the one about taking advice from someone with decades of experience...... some people of that experience havent a clue what adblue is, scr systems, Nox gases nor how the system operates....so there opinion isnt really valid.

A good hard drive never cures any of them, ffs if you monitor EGTs on a normal tdi you'll see that if you drive hard on a non regen cycle the car has a temporary rise in temps then its drops off if the system is clear. Some dogs need on average 600-700 degrees to actively clean.

I could go on in great detail about how the adblue and scr systems actually work, but I'll leave that to the experts (y)

Sorry but you’re now into the specific detail to the point where I cannot comment as I’m sure you can appreciate

Your question about operation though - all SCR systems will need to get to a temperature to start operation just like any catalyst.

So the system doesn’t work properly when it’s being used for short journeys, or longer stop/start journeys, it’ll only work on say a motorway or dual carriageway at constant speed for a prolonged period? And it definitely doesn’t work if it’s been horsed on?

So - what potentially is wrong with my car is either...
Ad blue injector,
Ad blue heater (less likely),
NOx injector,
Tank sensor,
Ad blue catalyst...

All of these are about £20 using the code MID60 on eurocarparts right? 😂😭🤮

The guys with years of experience are still operating and adopting to the new “engineering”.
I mentioned their advice because it has always been our first port of call if a light flashes up. Their advice 9 times out of ten will sort the problem. So I’d say it’s valid enough.
Even the OP who works for JLR advises taking it for a long drive

@pobmk4 i know you are a VW expert. Have you worked on many Adblue systems? I say this as should Monday’s ‘diagnostic’ prove limited, the VW dealership computer may be more accurate but their out of warranty prices will not be to my taste.

By and large the only adblue issues we see in Eddy Mays are on Sharans, and even at that it is once in a very very blue moon. Most of the issues are customers who have refilled tank but for whatever reason it doesn’t reset to full so need to do it manually with ODIS. Electronic issues are usually the adblue heater or pump in the tank and can only mind a couple of injectors that have needed replaced over the years.

Still flashing up every 5 seconds like an angry yellow twunt.

Looked up the replacement NOx sensor brill £450.
Flip off.
At that price, visit autotune or the likes and get it gutted and mapped out lol. Hope you get sorted, plenty of issues surrounding ad blu systems most caused by short journeys.

been there and supposedly had my XC90 mapped by a ‘specialist’ turbo crowd - not going down that road again.
Had my xc60 done 5 years ago with no issues, but not everyone is going to have the same experiance. had nothing but bother before that. Due to short journeys school runs etc pobmk4 seems to be worth a visit if available 👍

I have a Passat cc, never had to put ad blue in it, so assume it’s mapped out. Zero issues.

What is it with Sharon’s? I had the tank heater go 2 days into last years holiday but whistled my way to a VW dealer and said there’s you go’.

so unlikely to be that.

the injector seems very easy to get at and ‘clean’ - yup I’ve been on YouTube...
