Interested to hear what everyone does when the manufactures warranty expires. Renew with manufacturer/ aftermarket or just Bank the £400-£500 premium each year and put towards costs should they arise?. My cars out of manufacturers warranty now but bmw are looking nearly £600 for a years insured warranty and then nearly £900 per year afterwards once the mileage is above 60k. Car in question is a 3 series diesel saloon bmw.

Interested to hear what people currently do in this area and suggestions for decent third party options as well..

Personally I wouldn’t bother then. Stick with a good independent for maintenance.

BMW warranty, there literally is no choice here.
You take anything but that and what happens when you car breaks is it goes to the dealer, they are then instructed by the warranty company to remove and inspect the broken part. Once that’s done they have to inform the warranty co what is wrong and if it can be repaired or not. Meanwhile a few weeks have now passed and your aftermarket warranty company is busy exploring whatever way they can possibly save a tenner.
It’s a total nightmare. I’ve heard of engines going and diffs going and aftermarket warranty companies requesting can it be repaired etc

Meanwhile, your bmw warranty, your engine blows up, dealer sends an email and within a few hrs approval is given to replace it. New engine ordered and fitted ASAP job done no questions asked...

Honestly there is literally no choice here

According to some online if you take out the monthly payments then it will remain at the cheaper price even when mileage goes above the 60k but if you are on annual then the price will increase. Anyone here able to Confirm?. Its a 2013 F30 320D but those prices are pretty sharp in comparison to audi warranty prices for similar vehicles..

Edit - Once the car goes above 60k an annual policy would be £1096 which to me seems pretty steep? A second hand engine with 20k is about £1500 and likely to be the biggest expense on a 320d I would imagine. At those numbers it would be hard to justify the £1096 for a year's cover :/.

This is the exact reason I pay monthly with my BMW insured warranty with the 335i.
Started around 55k miles. So far nothing has broken... at all in the 2.5 years I’ve had the warranty. Hoping something does so I get some value out of it!

I must have got a good 335i...

My premium increases each year by around £1-2 per month as the likelihood of repairs increases as the car gets older - that’s what they say on the annual letter.

out of interest what price is it per month? The difference online between a car under 60k and over 60k is nearly double but if you go with the monthly option it doesn't seem to increase anywhere near that amount :/ strange setup.

Sell it and buy a reliable car ? lol
And that is exactly what they plan on you doing. The days of buying and maintaining a car are done, it’s now a rental and renew proposition and that’s what the manufacturers expect the majority to do.

@Sidecars55 Mrs B has a 320d and it’s warranty is due to expire in a few months, I’m planning on changing it but if that doesn’t happen I’ll be putting a BMW warranty on it monthly until I move it on. Granted it’s newer and around 30k on it but as you e pointed out once you tip the 60k miles barrier it becomes less viable

I went for the fully comprehensive with breakdown cover - I pay £58 ish per month with £100 excess

Can’t believe 60k is considered a huge risk and all this talk of warranty is a must tbh

If it’s that bad, as Stevie said, buy a more reliable car lol

Personally I’d keep my money, service by a good mechanic and pay if something happened

My mechanic has done several BM’s that the chain has snapped and i bet it’s cheaper than the extended warranty is costing over a few years

Also worth noting that only the BMW warranty will pay a dealer hourly rate. The other will have a max rate per hour of something like £50. The shortfall will be down to the customer.

Interesting to see what others do. I have a used approved warranty on my own bmw 3 series 320d at present . I priced an audi warranty now for a 2014 a5 sport back 2.0 tdi automatic and its actually more expensive now for a years warranty than the BMW one I currently have so looks like they aren't as cheap as previous years and have upped the price now to..

I have an aftermarket warranty on my discovery. So far I’m about break even/ slightly up but I’m happy with it for peace of mind as they have a habit of snapping cranks. This week it has paid out over £300 for a new door lock and cv joint. Not all manufacturer warranties cover wear and tear but my aftermarket one does. They also have 2 tiers to cover labour up to £50 per hr and then uncapped. There are loads of options. Take a look at warranty direct.

Tho you cant compare main dealer rates to independent specialist or good mechanic. So you wouldn't be paying £100+ an hour labour for an apprentice to fix it.

Unless its a major issue I cant see it being worthwhile personally.

If you continue with the warranty from BMW do you have to continue to have it serviced at BMW dealership?

£500 oil changes are a bitter pill to swallow.

I think Country Garage are cheaper than that ... however I thought most were ok as long as it was a VAT registered garage. Maybe not BMW.

I chose to continue with bmw for mine as the prices where actually reasonable. You can take it to any vat registered garage as long as they use the genuine parts as far as I'm aware.

Did you get this via BMW independent of the dealer?
Yep. Bought the car from Hollybrook, and then added the BMW warranty on, quote online then called to clarify a few things and bought over the phone.

First 30 days were not covered from memory
