What do you call a Lada with a sunroof?

In my day it was called a skip, but it would appear now it's a classic car worth almost £6k! 😂

The so called "classic car market" has gone to the dogs, speculators everywhere who think anything old is a classic and worth stupid money.

It all reminds me of the property boom back in 2006/7 when every man thought they were a developer and jumped on the bandwagon.

The crash is coming, I'm sure of it!

Mental. The price some of the classic stuff is going for is just beyond comprehension.

I think the difference is you can still go out and buy a brand new house but they aren’t making any more cars from a time when the environment wasn’t a consideration when designing it lol. I think the only thing that will make it crash is if the older stuff starts to get heavily taxed or banned.

To be fair it does have 265 miles, that's something impressive. Not that i think it makes it the price it is but it's impressive the condition in the photos.

Better than the constant stream of ads over the last couple of years with the title or opening line of a description on a 150k Renault Clio **EXCELLENT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY**. Drives me insane that's the first thing people put on an ad, esp when it's some high miled average condition everyday motor.

to be honest classic cars of any make or model are climbing

i have bought and sold a load of vauxhall’s in my time

i bought two novas in 1998 for a £5 er ffs

tho they are getting to the point where people with money want to relive there teenage years and those who can afford it are liking for a good example or the one they couldn’t afford when they where younger due to insurance ect

try and buy any old vauxhall’s it would scare ya

Can't wait for the crash, I'm going to snap up everything and wait it out until the next boom again. Maybe you could end up in a CSL again :p

Few examples on here of folk buying cars to hold on to and sell on for a 'profit' later. I guess it's more interesting than sticking it into an ISA or gambling at stocks and shares, and it's 'enjoyed' to some extent too.

That Lada needs a SR20DET and associated upgrades :grinning:

Volvo's!
Rare drives prices. The fact most Riva's are either at the bottom of the sea or back in Russia makes them an attractive rare easily maintained classic or daily retro. Niva's are the same, mad money for what is actually more basic than a Defender!

I hate to think how many Lada's I have owned and sold for silly money back in the day, probably about 13 or 14 between me and my Dad, I loved them as a car lol

S1 Rallyés are popping up on eBay between £8000-13,000 the last few months, not for concours examples either. Whether or not they're selling for that price I don't know but Hollybrook sold one recently for £9,000 so someones buying them!

I think I said to you in another post a few years ago that my Dad scrapped his Series 1 Rallye in around 2003/4 as no one wanted it and he couldn't sell it. NI car too, EAZ6554 was the number, in red with a set of period 5 spoke OZ wheels. I'm no optician but I know that my hindsight is 20/20.
Uncle who restores old cars is sickened when he sees Mk4 Escort XR3is up for pushing 10k. Last one he sold was an ex Ford Press car for about £1200 in 2005. Such is life.

the old stuff is crazy.... tasty/nice/sport/ rare old stuff i get but run of the mill stuff, just insane.

i dont see how/why it woudl crash though... property cashed in a large way due to the lending structure in place at the time driving people to borrow loads, fueled the market... 'values' rose... then pop. i dont imagine that many people finance the old stuff.. or not heavily like for property... but who know ! i do agree with an earlier post that if they are taxed or fueled to level that make them impractical... coudl be an whole different ball game !

There was a Lada Riva on RetroRides for £1500 with a Fiat Twincam engine in it, I was oddly tempted lol.

15 years of storage, restoration and maintenance isn't free. And then there's inflation. I'm sure a £1200 XR3i in 2005 would stand someone more than £10k today, assuming it's worth £10k today. There's rare high-end examples but for the most part the maintenance of some of these cars would likely outweigh any actual 'profits'.

Modern example:

You spend £5.5k on this and then you stick it in a bubble in the garage but use it sparingly over the next 15 years. It'll need roughly £600 in MOT fees over that time alone. Probably £3k for insurance and perhaps same again to take it to the specialist for annual services and then you might do some light restoration over 15 years and maybe spend another £500 on that & sundries and maybe renewing the bubble and running it all year long.

In 2035 it's worth what? £14/15k? Maybe? Which is what it basically stands you with all the costs and inflation.

Be the same story with the XR3i and loads of others.

Interest rates and yields are rock bottom or negative. Money men need somewhere to put their moola and a lot of them are dumping it in the classic car market. Now they’ll be going after old Porsche’s, etc but it’s has a trickle down effect on the whole market.

Once things normalise that money will leave (IMO)

you could well be right...... be fascinating to see what happens in the next 10... then 20 years. i think one reason that may make them tank in addition to that is the fect that the younger generation wont want even what we call classic now... and there are very few current cars that are likely to be special in the future... for one diesels galore... plus so many cars are similar to the next.

you are bang on correct though - some guys with mega money are just sitting buying up toys.... its not likely to impact them greatly how much teh market goes up or down....... its the normal joe bloggs that thinks... screw banks & pensions... i'm buying and stashing old motors.... for one thing any car will require a fair bit of $$ spent every 10 ? or so years to keep in anything like investment/collectible status..... in my opinion anyway
