So I'm just making a few repairs to my starlet & setting it up for sale. In just over a months time i shall be buying my 1st EK [1.4 or 1.5, both same for insurance] .. I'm going to be looking for some of the obvious stuff like rust, dents, leeks, knocks & bumps etc.

Is there any common problem on EK's to look out for? Has anyone got any tips on how to find out if I'm buying a genuine decent car or a turd rolled in glitter..?

I'm dieing to own a good decent reliable car that doesn't require imediate repairs. Love my jap cars, but civics are a new territory for me. Help appreciated!!

check the gearbox in idle for a rattling noise input shaft bearing common problem and expensive yo fix. usual, blue smoke on start up. like ashloys said they are cracking cars and a well serviced one goes forever

I wanted your facelift fogs until I realised they had a chunk of plastic missing :sob:

What side of the plastic is missing? I've a drivers side in the house.

Knocks from suspension, rattles from engine and gearbox, crunchy gears, rust underneath and around arches, dodgy windows, smoke on start up and when up the revs. Just check everything over for rattles and rust but a well serviced one will go on forever. Best to buy a standard one rather than a modified one since they're notorious for boy racers!

check the cv boots, all the wheel bearings, look for a petrol leak, check the electric windows, water in the spare tyre part, central locking, check rear drums for brake fluid, check the sub frame for rust, look in the brake discs for rust, check the rear trailing arm bushes, check the exhaust for rattling and blow outs, check if there is speakers and if they work, check to see if the head unit works, check if the headlights can be aligned and check if the mot is real

Thanks very much for all your help guys, sounds like its going to be givin a thorough look over. I'll take note of all this before i go to see them. Yea Andy i understand about geting a standard one, i just want one that is clean & doesn't need a lot of work. But some modifications would be nice as i wont be able to afford a lot of big mods. Basically looking for a clean EK9.. Wish me luck for finding one! i'm going to need it! lol

Whats your budget?

Around the 2k mark. If the car is worth the push i might stretch that extra mile. It can be done! I've seen some bargan EK's that are show worthie cars.

When it comes to an 1.4 or a 1.5, don't settle for a rough one because theres plenty more out there

I wont be settling! I'll make sure i find the right one, i've had bad luck with cars before, but i know what i'm looking for now. If i feel theres 1 or 2 small things i can fix myself, i'd take it as decent EKs are too hard to come by these days.

best thing you can do is bring a magnet and try it on ever panel.
not every seller will be happy with you sticking a magnet on there car though

lol! that is good thinking tho..

Are you looking a bog standard one or with mods ?
It all depends on condition for me, but the more mods the better & i have to like the look of it. The less plastic the better IMO. If it was clean enough i'd take it, plastic or not.

most or else all civics in this country have started rusting away, or else been covered up. so its hard to ind one with NO rust at all, as said above problems with windows and smoke/oil are common with most.

if you are genuinely interested i have a 1.4 ej9 for sale, just put it up earlier as im looking a type r for the summer.
ill take a few quid less than its up for too, as i need it gone.

U should know that's one thing with modifying cars tho, you never get ur money back.

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Its true that you don't get your money back when modyfing but a civic with 120k with tasteful mods will always get good money, b16 a civic and they are worth a fortune to some people.
