We're looking at getting car insurance for my son. He's 17 and just passed his test. His car is a 1.0 Arosa. We're getting quotes of around the 3k mark which I know is expected. Does anyone know any specialist companies that might be a bit cheaper? We've tried Adrian Flux.

All I could do with my 1.0 lupo when I passed my test was use all the comparison sites, find the cheapest quote, then phone around seeing if anyone would beat it, then phone the original company asking would they beat that.

Cheapest I got was £2,150 at 18, 1999 VW Lupo 1.0E (S trim was dearer iirc)

eCar provided the cheapest quote, however when I phoned them to have my website login details, they sent me someone else's details including bank details, name, number, address, car type, reg etc. So I wouldn't go near them again

Hughes weren't great, however they've been good for others.

Hopefully this helps

Hughes did put me on young drivers scheme through AVIVA or something - 1.1 Pug 206, and it was about 1,7K (but I was 23) and each year they have been the best for me.

Admiral/elephant have been cheapest for me. If you can do a multi car then do.
The other car (s) only have to be on the policy for 3 months I think. Knocked 30% off my premium!

Yep :grinning: And that was after all the negotiations and billions of phone calls I made. Don't forget I am foreign and we all drive on the wrong side of road while drunk - I still have a print out of the coupe quotes - 7K lol. 1.7 was cheap to me after those quotes! :grinning: However once you're here 5 years it drops and plus I get older, now I can insure my Type-R with Hughes for £800.

I got insured at 17 on a 1.5 Megane for £1500 fully comp, with M&S.

Something to try, go through the price comparison websites and which every comes up cheapest, go to their personal website and get a quote, cheaper everytime I have found

Pick a realistic price and call somewhere for a quote. When they give you the price, ask to speak to a manager and say "Axa (or another company) will insure you for this realistic price, can you beat that price?"

I went between Admiral and Axa about 6 times last year and they kept outbidding each other. Ended up getting 400 odd quid (30% odd) off my initial "cheapest" quote for an hour of phone time.

Try yourselves to his policy as named drivers. I still do this and it reduces premium by 75%...

Something wrong there...... I got insured fully comp with business use on my 2.5T S40 for £1580 with no no-claims bonus at 22

Did you try Liberty insurance NI, heard reports that people are getting really good quotes from them.

Edit: just tried them myself, twice as expensive of what I'm paying currently with AXA!

We went with Axa and their quote of £2400 in the end, they were the cheapest I could get and I spent hours on the phone. Ridiculous but there you go.

Bite the bullet, firsr year will always be insane. Gf's first year was £1200 FC and now with 1 year NCB its only £500 FC

I'd encourage anyone that has just passed their test to join the IAM and do the advanced test straight away.
