@Captain Starlet great post actually. I'm probably best floating around the £4k bikes til I find the type I really like before getting the one so to speak. I'm off to Google a supermoto because I don't even know what that is lol

Edit. Yes as it happens I have looked at supermotos. Love the husqy 701 supermoto but don't have a clue about them.

You might pay a little more a 701, but they are fantastic bikes and worth every penny. My dad has a 701 Enduro and I had a KTM 690 smcr, same bikes just different colours, KTM Husqvarna and Gas Gas are all owned my KTM.

They seem so slow compared to a sports bike, but I went a full summer choosing to ride the supermoto over the fireblade each time, they are so much fun and really teach you how to ride a bike. They wouldn't be fast on a motorway, but down a back road a sports bike would struggle to keep up.

My advice would be to try and get a test ride on as many different bikes as you can, or spend at the lower end of the scale until you know what you like.

What's the typical format for test rides at dealers. Do they follow you or what?

That 765 is well priced to be fair. A Street triple will feel more torquey than your Hornet just so you know. A 675 Triumph is even a good going bike. The 3 cylinder engine combines good low down power with holding it right up to near the redline. I loved mine and it wasn't even an R.

I'd probably be trying to talk you into a 1000cc, the way they pull is something else, when you take the notion. But in reality you don't need the power.

If you ride easy then discount a sportsbike, it won't be very enjoyable.

I'm actually tempted by a 1000cc sports bike because I don't think it would be for me long term but it would tick that box so to speak. I have such a broad appreciation for stuff and if I'd the money would have 10 bikes no doubt.

If you don’t know wot a supermoto is then a 1000 cc sports bike isnt for you , ya don’t have the experience

I just took both parts of my license to Hursts and they let me take the new fireblade out for 4 hours. I stuck £20 of petrol in it, but not sure if they expect you too.
Flip that's ideal!

🤣🤦 Yes I'm sure knowledge of terminology is what constitutes a good rider. Regardless, I'm under no illusions but thanks for the helpful input all the same.

I went from 600 Hornet to 929RR fireblade and it was simply awesome. I wasn't 'experienced' but was old enough with enough years on the road in cars to stay safe.

Aprilia Tuono would be another one I'd add to your test list..

Terrible shame Allen's Autos is no more..... Their open days were just what you need. I wonder do any of the current dealers do days like that? With Allen's, you booked 2 or 3 bikes out and were taken on an escorted group run by the PSNi bikers. I'll never forget those runs..... Mental!

Had spied a Tuono in mccrums that looks tidy actually. Having watched a lot of reviews there doesn't seem to be many modern bikes that are rubbish. The most critical reviews ends up being nitpicky things really and stuff that wouldn't matter for the occasion or fair weather rider.

McCallens do a couple of open days through the year. Have to get in early with the bookings as it’s always packed.
@ALN it sounds like your heart is set on a 1k sportsbike. Stick your money in a 15 year old R1 or Blade or something, ride it for a few months and if you’re smitten by the experience then invest in something fresher 1000cc wise come the summer. You’ll get your money back on the older machine no problem. Potentially harder sell/depreciation if you fork out 10k on a fresh RSV or S1000rr or something and find after 6 weeks living with it its not what you expected.

True.
Main problem with Aprilia was always dealer and parts issues. Not sure if its any better recently.

Well in that case I'd say try it out. My first bike was a 2012 Street Triple. Done 12k in 2 years and loved it. Sold it because the miles were getting up and didn't want to be stuck with it. Bought a Tiger 1050. Good enough but numb, too tall for me, and couldn't sort out the wind noise so away it went.

I knew I wouldn't be doing many miles anymore with starting a family and like you I decided I wanted to try out a 1000cc sportsbike. Had never even rode one but just went for it. It turns out I really like it and have no notion of changing yet.

They really do have their benefits I think, lovely handing, lightweight, and the spread of power is just sublime when you take the notion. You do get used to the racey riding position, you just wouldn't want to be stuck in slow traffic or out with very slow riders etc for too long. Not that I'm Valentino Rossi 😂

I swear by our model of fireblade, my 06 was the nicest bike I have ridden yet and they still look fantastic today. Lovely suspension, nice riding position and more than enough power.

Im 6ft5 and it fits really well, I took it over to Scotland for the weekend and it was great, didn't feel sore or stuff afterwards.

They are relatively easy to service and maintain yourself and hold their money very well.

I don't even miss any of electronics that the s1000rr has, but maybe that's because I have been used to nothing for so long. If your starting out and used to a modern electronic package it might feel like a step backwards.

It's good to hear that because I haven't tried much else to compare it to. I had a go on a GSXS1000F beforehand and thought it was a good bike. But the Fireblade put it to shame. The gsxs felt loose in comparison, and not as nicely finished. The riding position was obviously more comfortable but strangely I felt I could do more mileage on the Blade?

I noticed the the equivalent GSXRs are a bit harder to buy than a Fireblade. And harder to get a low miler. Never had a run on one though.

The 04 - 07 fireblade was really well finished, I love the hybraulic clutch, its so smooth compared to the cable clutch on the s1000rr and even the new fireblade. I think bikes of that era were just built properly. I had a go on an 06 gsxr 750 and it was fantastic, can imagine the 1000 would be equally as good too.

Certainly can't go wrong with Japanese Superbikes from mid 2000s on.

@ALN I would be going for something like this.

That's a thread closer right there. HRC colour scheme is superb on that.

Not much choice over here. I bought mine in Scotland and got it brought over.

I'm not in any rush thankfully. Just hoping an RMSer might have something of interest to move on.

Okay. I bought a bike but I'll still be on the lookout for a sports bike probably a blade or cbr600rr. Figured I'd rather wait to get a nice real nice example again and tick another box in the meantime lol
