im building with a target of around 1-1.2 bar of boost, could be a little less depending when i start having spark blowout problems
I keep coming back to your target boost and asking myself two questions .... why and wtf :grinning:

My t28 runs more boost than this and my GT3076r was at 2.5 bar without detonation or spark blowout issues.

thats the target at the minute.. once i get up around there ill see what the story is and more than likely i will probably want to push the boost up more. thinking ahead with the turbo size. i also went for this size of turbo because i have first hand experience tuning a turbo 325i with a similar sized turbo (maybe even exact same size as mine and the one i tuned were .70 AR on the comp side, not sure about turbine side tho but both are T3 flange) and i liked where boost came in and the overall feel of the car. the one i tuned was only running 8psi but after an hour or so worth of tuning we had it starting to break traction in 3rd gear coming on boost on an ever so slightly damp road. i could have run something as small as a T28, maybe even a T25 and it would boost a fair bit lower down the revs but the general consensus with boost on these engines is that smaller turbo's can bottleneck the engine in the upper RPM's so everyone tends to use no smaller than a T3 unless they want to go crazy with a big wastegate and all that. plus id rather run a bigger turbo easy than push a small one hard. most popular turbo by a long shot for these engines is the holset HX35, everybody and their brother are pulling HX35's off cummins diesel engines in scrapyards in the states to boost an E30 lol

detonation and spark blowout are not associated with any turbo per say.. both happen in different engines under different conditions/different boost pressures/etc. ur engine may have coil on plug ignition or whatever else so spark blowout may not be a real issue for u whereas on these old engines with their coil/distributor setup it becomes an issue around 1 bar of boost regardless of turbo used.

yea manifold is no problem.. its the downpipe that will be fun. ill also have to relocate the oil filter in order to bolt up the manifold, havent bought a relocation kit yet but its on the list. probably go for a mocal kit. discovered theres a mocal kit for this engine but im not mad keen on the fittings/lines on the BMW M20 kit. discovered theres a landrover kit that shares the same threadding on the filter and all as the BMW kit but uses nicer lines and fittings so ill probably go for that one.

99% of the build threads and build pics i have been eyeing up are on LHD cars with the column on the other side. have spoke to a few that have boosted RHD as well as the one i tuned and there is just enough room to worm a 3 inch DP past the column. im still undecided if i will ru na full 3 inch system or run a 2.5 inch system or a combination of 2.5 and 3 inch. everyone reckons if i run a combo the thing to do is 3 inch DP into 2.5 inch system but a 2.5 inch DP will help loads with clearing the column so i dunno what im doing there yet..

Volvo's!
So is this to replace the lost compression? Or is all this boost going to blow past the piston rings and straight out the crank breathers??

ye of little faith..

short of something on the engine actually being weak as is and throwing a leg out ill not need a low loader for it. believe it or not, since i started in 2009 i have become a bit of a name in the ECU tuning circles for these E30 ECU's. no one before me has managed to create launch control in the standard ECU and i have figured out tons of maps that were previously unknown. i even get the odd email asking me questions about how stuff works from the one guy i used to think was the god of older bosch motronic ECU's, FR Wilk of www.motronic.ws

hell i been offered 3 jobs since then also, one with miller performance in canada, one with a wee shop in florida because i showed the owner who was previously into GM/chevy ECU tuning how to work with the BMW ECU's and one in australia under similar circumstances.

so what have i learned from this thread? ask no one for anything because even a simple "where can do this for me" is too tough of a question for u people to answer. never mind why i want to do what i want to do, its my car and my decision. u want to do it ur way then buy ur own and have at it. i may start sweet talking local engineering places at this rate or start digging around on google... thanks ever so much for all the help, bunch of toss pots.

might be up for that hammy boy.. would be a bit of fun. id think an even start would be fair enough for both tbh.

be a ways off yet, havent put a damn thing on the car yet nevermind got it running, tuned or dealt with any issues that arise after its running.

whats the point in winning the slower car? never really understood this?

Probably more the embarrassment factor. If you go mouthing and slabbering about how fast your car is....put your money where your mouth is. So when you look at it like that, Dan should have no problem putting his car on the line.
