The world has gone mad.

It's nice, but not £30k nice! No doubt some Ford beard will be wetting himself with excitement over it though!

I really don't get the whole mad prices for old Fords. They're generally dreary, mass produced middle of the road cost-compromise boxes that were at best average, unremarkable cars when they were first produced.

Four star classics. Always mad prices and such a slow turnover

We were having this discussion in work the other week about mk1/2 Escorts. Completely overrated was general consensus and that was coming from people who owned them. Same goes for "Twincams"

Can't get my head around anyone liking a Capri lol

My mum had a mk3 1.6 Laser in white with The Club body kit and brown interior. 'Twas the car of my dreams as a kid!

I had 2 x 3.0s Capris in the past - cool at the time - but today - tame as f.

It went mad a few years ago as far as classics are concerned. Almost everything now seems to be at about 250% of 2010 prices. Very few under the radar classics left. Might have been 4 Star who were looking £80k (!) for a low mileage 924 Carrera GT about six months or so back. Doesn't seem so long since a shade under £20k would have bought a good one.

I've always assumed that people will often try to own something that a father or uncle had when they were a child and which captured their imagination and sparked their interest in cars.

Also, so many people who don't really know cars well but fancy the idea of something classic and a bit flash aspire to a Capri. The roads were full of them so everyone knows what they are and they appeal to people who think The Professionals was a cool show. Jamie Oliver is handbraking a Mk.3 on his current series. ^o)

With these hugely priced low mileage cars, as with any other car for sale, the dealers only need the one buyer. Probably a well-heeled person who wants to add it to a private collection.

Better than trusting your money to a bank, its socially acceptable to keep a classic tucked away in your garage out of sight.

Judging by the property market at the minute no-one learnt anything from the last 4-5 years, classics will almost certainly retain their value, but you are right, the prices for high end classics at the minute is massively inflated. Quite a few people stung on F40's over the last year where they paid in excess of a million for them and suddenly the market was saturated with people asking 6 figures. They seem to have settled again at a more normal 5-600k now, but there's a few people not happy about it. Same applies with E-Types. The "affordable" classic market is starting to gather pace which is fantastic. Couple of years ago an 80's or 90's mini was worth a couple of hundred quid, now its £2k minimum if there is an MOT on it.

I'm just holding out until the Mk1 Midget reaches Frogeye money, then I'll be happy

Dad has had various Mk2s over the years, all RS2000s, has one now. Whilst they're cool, they're a crap drive as standard IMO. You'd need to do what @richie_mck done to tempt me to have one!

In saying that, his first car was a Mk2, he's mad into rallying etc, so it is a sentimental thing.

4 star classics are part of that group of people responsible for putting the dream cars of the late 20's and early 30's folks childhood completely out of reach now... Barstewards, mere mortals will now never enjoy making dreams reality.

But you can.

The problem is the vast majority see their reach as being what they can financially afford based on their current level of income or projected future income.

Outside of work, your time on your own projects is essentially free, you can afford to do this due to the 9-5, so buy a cheap, rougher example and chuck it in the garage and spend your time learning how to restore it to its former glory correctly. Not just lash some patches in, hit it with some matt black and waxoyl and get the wheels refurbed. Actually doing the thing right from front to back. The sense of achievement is something you could never buy and will make ownership much more enjoyable than simply dandering into 4 Star Classics with a wad of hard earned cash.

If the prices keep going the way they have been this past while I'm sitting on a nice wee earner! Although that is not the reason I bought them in the first place, it was because I wanted the cars. If I was to start from scratch now, I'd say the chances of me having what I have now is slim to none. My total purchase price of the Novas I have is around £10k, I could almost get that for the Sport alone if I was to sell today, scary the way the values have risen in a short while.

Yep just look at hot hatch prices now its taken the best part of 15- 17 years for values of an average joe hatch to crawl their way back up, the iconic ones ( the ones that were any good ) have climbed quicker and higher, id still go for a 16v gti mk2, but in reality i cant be f#cking bothered, the worst part is that excellent examples of any car ( see the price of used cars thread ) command a premium, now i would pay a premium to have something that is worth it, but the problem is as soon as the douchebags with rusted out abused to f*ck examples get wind of it, everyone and sundry start asking the same money as the guy with the mint example screwing the market.

People can ask what they like, getting it is a different thing. Although if somebody's prepared to pay a premium, more power to the sellers elbow.... Can't blame the man for that.

As was pretty much every car from every manufacturer of that time. I certainly wouldn't pay £30K for that Capri, but it doesn't mean somebody else won't.

I know for a fact that all star classics sell a lot of original pristine cars that are far from that.

I have plenty of connections on the mainland that collect e30's and I know a few people who have been very disatisfied with the cars they have viewed.

Compared to modern cars which are unique, low volume limited edition driver's cars built with no expense spared?

They look to me like they give them a good detail, a studio photoshoot and now we want a gazillion quid for It
