A Mate is after something fun under a grand. Something with MOT that might need a wee bit of work but is kinda sporty. Something along the lines of Golf GTi, Audi TT, ZR 160, Mini Cooper, Rover 25 GTi, Corolla / Yaris Tsport or a 4 seater convertible (diesel accepted) for example. Basically, something nippy but fun to drive and work on. He has a car to trade for too if you are open to a swap/trade deal.
