basically take a mould off something in fiberglass
smooth the insides, and coat with gel coat
add some chemical that makes stuff easy to remove, lay down your matting and resin away, though carbon wrapping and/or making a fiberglass version then carbon wrapping it is prob alot easier

saves you having to strengthen the carbon with kevlar etc etc, proper carbon fiber hates being made into angles and curves!

acttually bibby its easy made into curves etc for big plane parts anyhow.no i need to know how to make a good mould bonnet etc i will be bagging the mould and using a injection process where the resin is pumped round on top of the tack cloth then sucked down through to the carbon material heah presto no rubbing down no gel coat perfect finish all the time i will be doing it your way for cold air ducting etc

the thing is, the mould is the thing you have to have perfect, ie alot of rubbing and gelcoat!
5the other thing is by injection moulding things like bonnets etc etc, means the likes of the edges and corners will sit high or low, hence why most carbon manufacturers for car parts tend to hand roll sheets to try and get them as close to 100% as possible!

ewok, Ive a mate in england who is currently starting carbon fibre car parts. He has already made a bonnet for peugoet 306. He has a contact with a guy from Reverie (made parts for TVR race team i believe)..if you are thinking about making money on it or doing it cheaply then the carbon supplier is the person you need to speak to.

Ive done fibreglassing myself but havent had hands on experience with carbon weave... if you have plenty of time for practising id say it would be a good hobby. good luck with it

i dont understand ur question.

u do moulding at ur new job and are thinkin about making car panels

so i take it you understand how to go about the moulding process (or are learning etc)

u want to know how to make the original mould???

if u want to make a bonnet you use a bonnet and make a female mould of it in which u then make ur copies (basically the way bibby has descibed for f/g)

i worked in a f/glass bodyshop for 2 years and we made moulds etc. car bodies, we made the original mould then they were sent to a f/glass moulding company who reproduced them for us, but things like door skins/ door mouldings etc were made in house by us..

wot is the company you hav started to work for in this! i also work with carbon fibre an a reson injection method and wet lay up which the carbon has its own resin already in the carbon

as for carbon goin around corners and curves it does this very well bibbly so i sugest u should leave that to somone that knows wot they are talkin about

that why there are different plies of carbon 8h/plain weave and weather u lay it up at 0/90 or 0/45 orientation

yes carbon does go round corners and curves, but you will find carbon with resin is weakest at the point where it has gone round a tight corner or curve!

kevlar doesnt like being bent at all, thats why it is so good with boat sails, normally a creased sail is scrap!

lads dont be falling out i was only asking the best way to make a mould. @ ian we do a dry layup as there is less chance of bridging and creases

....are you just making single bonnets or one pair of panels? door-builds or the like?
there are specialist dvds available for the process from the mad yanks who do that sort of thing full time........ (oh boy, high on resin all day long, what a dream job.... beats working for Siemens as a spark!)
pm me with exact details of what you want to do and I'll try to guide you.
