Things are coming along nicely, a set of new plugs and we're back up to 4 cyinders, however the exhaust manifold is blowing but it just looks like it's the gasket.

Got the old minilights out of the garage to replace the OZ's as they had good tyres, or so I thought, turns out they had two bad tyres as well so not sure if I will use them or keep the OZ's. Having a Panda I had to make 2 trips unfortunatly. If I do use them, I'll paint them black again.

This is the section we'll be cutting out and welding the new bit into.

I'm thinking at the moment cheap tires (or hedge finders as you call them Graham  ) on the OZ's for road use and to pass MOT (and crap tyres=sideways ;) ) and then good expensive tyres on the Minilights for next year if I compete again.

hahahaha

f**k off ya cheeky git. When I eventually find my Metro, you can have your rear bumper back, but you're going to have to swap me for my headlight and indicator too :p

Hasn't been an update for a while as the car was off to get welded, as you know this whole project was a race against time but happy to report that the mechanics (Car Care Centre Lisburn) and the bodyshop (Dunmurry Crash Repair) have been brilliant as usual and the car is ready for MOT.

Only MOT date I could get before next week is in Larne, I live in Lisburn so not the longest trip in the world but a bit nervous still to do that trip in a car that hasn't moved for 4 years.

So MOT is on Saturday, everyone cross their fingers.

So was MOT time, and picked up my car from my good friends at the Car Care Centre who dropped it back to my house on a trailer.

As you probably know the law says that you are OK to drive the car from you house to the MOT centre, so took some pictures at home while I had the chance.

One the way popped into Tesco's and got loads of dirty looks, but I did have Dexter with me so not sure what the problem was.

So everything was going great, it was a big drive to the MOT centre in Larne but I was loving being back behind the wheel of this car, but then.......

Did I make it? Watch this space :grinning:

Although just to clarify it was me being a prat broke the car, the Car Care Centre guys worked wonders fixing the car up in time but I did something on the way to the MOT that broke it and it wasn't their fault.

Excellent! Hope you made it, lol :grinning:

Love the parking - it is for people with kids in the car, so what is the problem?

See much worse with people without kids actually with them still parking in those bays, because they "have a family", lol - idiots 8-|

If you are bothered enough, pull the cam cover off and I will paint it for you. Still have paint left over from doing mine.

So before I set out on my drive to the MOT centre, my mechanic reminded me that it was a 21 year old car that hadn't moved for 4 years and I should take it easy.

Unfortuantly, I got a bit carried away and drove... rather more quickly than I should of.

So there I was minding my own business driving up the M2 (at 70MPH obviously :-# ) and suddenly I can't see a thing and the power steering has gone, scared the **** out of me. Hit the wipers and it clears the coolant from the screen but smoke coming from the front of the car and with the PS gone I assume the engine had blown up . But pulled over and it was still running although temp guage was high. Turned it off and freewheeled off the motorway as luckly was just coming up to the Sandyknowles exit when it went.

Turns out the alternator/water pump belt had snapped and knocked off the PS belt as well and damaged some timing markings as well on the engine. RAC man stuck a generic Unipart one on and I limped her home.

So it was a shame but even though it was quite dramatic at the time no permament damage.

So Monday morning I check the MOT slots and there is one for that evening at Lisburn, 5 minutes from my house. I take the car down to my mechanic and get the proper belt fitted, Dexter and I get our matching jackets on and off to the MOT centre.

Looks like a transformer here.

And she passed with flying colours.

So, mission accomplised, and not only did I take Dexter to school in a racing car, I got to take my daughter to nursery in one as well.

Such a refreshing change to the usual threads! The fact there is a history attached to the car, the story surrounding it and the way you tell it... all combine to make it a good read lol

You can tell by look on your kids face, that it made his day arriving in the car (y)

And much to my surprise I still have it. It's interesting to compare the size of the Astra back in 1997 to the modern Fiesta in that Photoshop.

170000km, 8 Counties and 3 diffs and she's still going strong :grinning:

I spy this all the time recently on my dander home through Belfast. I hadn't seen it in years and was just wondering today who owned it.

Mad with the roof down in this weather :p
