Just saw the same. Seems like RB think he is doing what they expect him to do within the tools and the guidelines they provide him.

I guess it also means they are not interested in the likes of Sainz.

I'm sure the deal comes with the usual eff-off clauses anyway should either party change their minds. So he might still be out at the end of this season should RB decide someone else comes along that they would rather have on board.

Number 2 driver in every sense of the word....

Actually a bit of a shocker when there's bang average journeyman drivers like Checo who have made the dominant car look slow when they aren't crashing into everyone around them are still getting drives when there's a whole roster of junior drivers with no prospect of F1 for a good while.

Ps the notion he's given a hobbled car is utter bollocks.

He's not given a "hobbled car".

But he is not given the same upgrades, settings, engine management configurations, etc.

His objective isn't to challenge for a championship. The majority of the resources over a season get put on Max' car to do that job.

Checo's job is to mop up manufacture points as best he can with what is left.

It is no different from Bottas at Mercedes when Lewis was fighting Max.

Or Barrichello in the Brawn against Button.

Or anyone alongside Schumacher or Vettel. Etc.

It is how F1 works. Always has, always will.

Oh, and Checo despite apparently being so utterly hopeless did finish second in the championship last year.

Lol, well aware how F1 works cheers, it is a team sport after all...

He made 2nd in such an utterly dominant car (upgrades or not) look very, very hard work last year 🤣. Bottas actually seemed to be able to bang in decent results with a degree of consistency, whereas it's hard to know if you'll get Perez who can keep it on the track or the Perez who'll collect other cars / scenery.

Heard Andrew Benson talking about this during one of the FP sessions on BBC sport. Basically said RB didn't really have an option but to keep Perez on. Don't remember the ins and outs but went through alot of drivers and it all made sense.

He's doing what they need him to do, at the price they want to pay.

As for crashing, he's running in the pack and will obviously have more incidents than Max cruising away a mile up front. Last weekend it was Occon taking out two cars, including Perez.

Not saying he's a driving god or anything. Just he's doing what he's there to do.

Every single RB #2 has struggled at RB, and then done better in other teams after. Except Ric who went the other way around 😇

Tbh there doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with following each other these days, overtaking ability actually seems pretty well judged this year, its more that the teams often don't want the drivers to overtake cause there's no real benefit unless on the last stint or out of position.

Great entertainment that! Was really hoping Lando was going to get another win.

Seems this season isn’t just as bad as we anticipated 😂

Why do Williams not just bin Sargent now. Total waste of time. There’s no way he’s keeping the seat and they could give Antoneli a bit of seat time for the rest of the season.

Because Antonelli isn't exactly setting the F2 grid alight is likely part of it, so he'd be better with seat time in F2 first.

Sargent is hopeless but likely brings money and appeals to the America F yea types even if he's *****.

Williams as a hole is **** tbf, Vowels comes across as a bull****er, Sargent is the weakest driver by a distance I reckon, Albon is decent tbf but ultimately an RB reject.

Merc need someone top drawer to go alongside Russell, even hear them in the cool down room, “oh here he is” lol

Canada makes a great race 👍

Ferrari was a random one.

That was a good race.
I still don't think old Geordie is a No.1 driver. He always seems to drop the ball. I know conditions were awfully tricky, but still...
Did you hear Russell say that he had to go through Hamilton's data to find out where he could make up time.
He won't have that resource to call on next year. Russell will have to work out how to drive on his own.

He isn’t a‘natural’ like Lewis, Max and Lando.

Lewis has been trying to develop & experiment with that car since the switch to ground-effects. It sounds like he's almost got to the stage where he's over-thinking the car and setup.

George has the luxury of taking it at face-value and driving it, & sometimes that's no bad thing.
