This happened to a friend of mine when he was in Germany and he decided in a new engine for future faith in the Disco. The quote was around €18000 (bear in mind it was in Germany and the new engine had to come from uk). When doing the work they found it needed extra work like injectors and turbos etc so the bill ended up being €23000. Good old British engineering. He did say he probably should have bought another one instead but then he could have been in the same situation all over again.

Not that it really matters but the TDV6 is actually a Ford designed and built engine

Glad she’s getting sorted 👍

Like all brands lr has its engines to avoid and unfortunately she picked the main one! If looked after there are plenty on 200k+ though tbf, not that that’s any use to her.

Never understand why everyone jumps on the Land Rover is awful bus when companies like Porsche have way more engine failures but everyone sings their praises.

We’ve owned I think 7 of them, some new, some bought with near 200k on them and have never had any issues I wouldn’t expect from any car at some point in their life, and are always easily and cheaply repaired.

I Tried BLRC three times this morning but no answer.
Looking parts for the l322 and normally a few calls and you get through, called literally over 20 times the last couple of days and not picked up once, must be mental busy.

I wouldn’t have much faith in a 2nd hand engine. Could end up costing her the full amount in the end. Get it up the road when done.

Amazing the amount of people that buy cars like this and forget how much they were new, and the potential maintenance costs that come with them.

Maybe so, but I can't name one other car (modern or otherwise) with such prolific engine failure (save maybe the 1L ecoboost, but Ford seem to be very decent about contributing toward that). There's hardly a month goes by I don't hear about someone's Discovery needing an engine either on here or in the real world lol.

Hope she gets sorted ok.

How many bmw diesels stretched timing chains? Genuine question but was it not very common at a time? Did Audi not have a problem with 2.0tfsi’s suffering failures though maybe they weren’t catastrophic. Sadly I do agree though… there have been quite a lot of failures in the 2.7 / 3.0 Lion engine and LR seem to have washed their hands of the problem. I’d heard but don’t know for sure that because they have admitted some sort of fault that warranty companies would no longer stand over it.

If you buy a new engine from JLR, have they actually fixed the core issue or know what is causing so many failures?

I’ve heard lack of proper service/low oil levels is one cause 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t believe there is a fix. If they do know the failure cause, they haven’t publiclaly stated it as far as I know. I think even we’ll serviced examples have failed.

The one I’ve talked about in the original post was fully serviced every year.

Surely to goodness most faced with that bill will park it somewhere that it’s definitely going to get burnt out while they walk the dog..

Yes that’s another one of the few engines I’m wary of in the trade, but even at that a stretched timing chain does not equal catastrophic engine failure; it can generally be caught on early and fixed for around a grand these days, and it’s then a selling point of the car as no timing chain lasts forever, they just happen to go prematurely. Also, they are otherwise reliable cars.

Not sure on the 2L TFSI but Iv had plenty and not had a major issue. Chains go on the 3.2 pretty early, but again same as above applies.

Worst Iv experienced was a friends 2018 SDV6 Disco, at 2 years old and 20k miles broke the crank cruising down the motorway! And I think that’s meant to be the “fixed” engine. Thankfully was in warranty, but still hassle and loss of faith in the vehicle. Lovely thing to drive mind you.

Bumping this up, anyone on here any interest in buying this heavily discounted with the engine bust and fixing it themselves and selling it on?

Things haven’t went according to plan with the fella who was supposed to fix it so 10 months later she just wants to get it picked up and just sold on as it is still needing fixed. Absolute nightmare for her, been without it this length of time as a childminder too.

She said she needs £8k for it but I’m talking with the mechanic to try and get it sorted out with the engine rebuilt and she can then sell it on as fully repaired, it’s not worth a whole pile the way it is.

Turns out The engine is already rebuilt, that side of it just needs paid for then the mechanic can do his bit and get it built back up again. Crossed wires it seems and there’s always two sides to the story!

Legit, or "dealer stamp"....?

My car allegedly had full dealer history too....still had the original OEM air filter in it dated same year of car manufacture of 2015

I would not trust a dealer service history one bit.
On the mk7 golf I had, air filter was only checked on the inspection service(every other service) and was only to be replaced if necessary. With most main dealers now offering so called” fixed price” servicing, unless it’s really bad, it will be given a blow out, or cleaned with a vacuum and put back in again. Some go as far as saying they are reducing waste.
