Very nice car, seen this at Bavarian a few times I was up. I’ve the silver palladium interior in my E92 as well, sometimes I love it and others I want to change but definitely brightens it up 😀

Some progress on the scirocco tonight. Hoping to be turning the key on it tomorrow and hoping for the best that it starts again. All being well it will be back on the road in a couple of weeks, and hopefully do my first trackday in it in October!

Cheers mate. It's definitely a hit with me. Only risk is I am using this for everything bar carrying the dog around atm, so hopefully it stays nice and clean. Will have to keep on top of it

Might as well keep the scirocco updates here too. Maybe the thread title can be updated by one of the mods?

Anyway, everything finally built back up engine wise. Car started but died immediately a couple of times on me. Couldn't figure it out, until I realised I'd been a little but stupid.

We had taped a bag over the cone filter to try keep it clean and dry in the period we were working on it. We forgot to remove this, so obviously the engine wasn't getting air. Bag removed, and engine is running better than ever. Delighted, and seem to have really gotten away with one with the timing chain stretch!

My mate has the bumpers and wings sitting in primer ready for paint, so once these are done we will fire them back on and get it on the road. Will change the oil and filter again in a couple of hundred miles just on the off chance something untoward has gotten in around everything during the extended period of the work. Have some millers oil ready to go in, then all being well get it to Trackskills in October!

I have lowering springs in the rear, so will need to fire the fronts in too some day but that will be done over the next couple of weeks. Then hopefully not much else except drive it at last!

M3 is about to tick over onto 60k miles. Absolutely loving it and it gets driven all the time, roughly 6k miles since I got it back in August (despite me wfh)

It's due a service, and has a full BMW history. What's people's thoughts on service with bmw vs a specialist like Colm Hyland? Does it have any impact if I were to renew the BMW warranty? Resale values? Personally I'd value the specialist history more but I know the full dealer history will be a draw for some buyers.

Onto the scirocco, one of the rear shocks broke where it meets the top mount. It has the adjustable suspension which has the joys of expensive shocks 🙃 so it's currently up on axle stands while I figure out whether or not to go with the expensive oem replacements or go with uprated aftermarket parts without the connections (and what the implications are)

Wouldn't even entertain anyone but Colm Hyland. I 100% wouldn't trust an M car with a main BMW dealer - I've heard some horror stories from Audi/BMW dealers to be honest. Anyone worth their salt come resale time will be looking for specialist service history rather than a main BMW dealer history.

Agree wouldn’t leave an electric scooter with either never mind an “M” car or RS in to Audi as a friend found after leaving his RS6 in for a recall

all confirming what i thought tbf. Will ring Colm tomorrow and see what the craic is.

Is the comprehensive bmw warranty renewable when serviced outside the dealers? I think it is but want to confirm. That's the only worry really

100% can recommend Colm Hyland, have left the M4 up with him for various things, him and the other lads there knowledge is second to none. Few of my friends also have M cars and other BMWs and use Colm.

Personally would rather use an independent specialist and buy a car that has been looked after by one.

Missed the milestone today but close enough 😂

I gave it a quick wash yesterday. Unfortunately driving it through the winter so far has taken its toll, found a few milky spot on one of the alloys, must have got stone chipped on the diamond cut finish. Won't do anything until the weather improves, then will decide weather to get it refinished the same or to get them all painted.

It's also booked in with Colm Hyland in a few weeks for a minor service and to see if it needs anything else. He mentioned doing the rod bearings too, but I think I'm leaning towards renewing the bmw warranty in August instead for peace of mind!

Colm did my rod bearings a few years ago and it was money well spent! Lovely looking car but difficult to keep them in this weather

Car is in for a service this week. Spent all day today cleaning it inside and out with Anachem products. Tarminator made the whole thing a lot easier!

Only thing not done really was the steering wheel. What's the best way to freshen up an alcantara wheel?

Nothing much exciting happening here. Unsurprisingly the car needed rear tyres, and when I got them fitted they told me the front passenger was down to canvas on the inner shoulder. So I got 2 front put on today as well and a 4 wheel alignment.

Expensive month but has to be done! ContiSport 7s all round on the advice of @G24NTR 😁

Still haven't got the wheels refurbed yet. They're wild looking so need to get them addressed soon but just been driving away at it. Up to 67k miles now too which is just over 12k miles since I bought it last August. Its hilariously expensive for those sort of miles but everytime I look out the window I'm still buzzing with it, so it can stay another while!

And just soapy water or a specific cleaner?

I did an Alcantara AMG steering wheel in work here. It was flat and matted, like plastic +o( .

I just used hot clean water and a good microfibre cloth. Fluffed up like new.

Aye I keep thinking I should sell it with the miles it's doing and I did stick it up for sale. I was probably asking too much as tbh I didn't really want it to go!

Fairly annoying update here but thankfully for the Scirocco and not the M3.

A few months back I noticed a slight oil leak on the driveway. A bit of investigation and it looked like it was coming from the back of the engine, most commonly on the 2.0tsi its from the rear main seal. It wasn't too bad initially so fed it oil for a little while but as it got worse I got it booked in to a mechanics to get sorted.

Called out to them and they said they could take it straight away and would have it back in a week, or the end of the following week ar the latest. Sounded too good to be true and it definitely turned out that way. While the gearbox was coming out we decided to put a new clutch in, and also asked them to sort out the intermittent faults we were still getting for epc lights coming on and poor running associated with that. We also had an abs fault that I couldn't sort, so got them to do all the work needed.

They assured me the abs fault was just wiring but when it came to the crunch, there was a fault with the abs ecu. Again, seems common in these cars from research so it was sent away to England to get sorted.

In the end, the car was with the mechanic for 7 and a half weeks. I appreciate the abs ecu issue was a surprise and delayed by maybe a week at most, but this was a mad amount of time. Every time I called the car was "just being looked at right now" blah blah. Blamed lack of staff, being there on his own (this is important) for the delay but we eventually got it back. The car was out of mot so happened to get an mot booked 2 days after we got it back. Should be no problem, plenty of money spent on it and everything they told me needed done was done.

Fail. Engine management light not illuminating. Strange, as this was definitely on when we stopped the car off.

Call and a visit and both people who work there deny doing anything. I pulled the clocks out and took them apart and sure enough, a square of tape over the MIL. I call back out and they both assure me separately "it definitely wasn't them, but one of the other lads could have done it". They then mentioned a mysterious man who has now left but worked on the car when it was there (when the guy was left on his own apparently?) And I had never ever seen. Hardly much reassurance. There is a recurring intermittent fault coming up for the MAF that was also there when dropped off, but this never came up in any conversation with them.

This is really really frustrating. I could live with the car being out of action for so long because I trusted that it was coming back all sorted and ready to go. Tape being stuck over the MIL just has us questioning everything else that was done or the standard to which it was done, especially when we handed over a handsome enough sum to get everything sorted once and for all. The car seems to be running better but time will tell, but that's a mechanic that I will never ever use again. Tough lesson but such is life. Anyway the car is now motd, no tape over any warning light and new MAF installed.

During this saga the M3 was our only car and as such it's piled the miles on! Coming up on 10,000 since February, so it's booked in with Colm Hyland again in early November for a service and biting the bullet to get the rod bearings done too. Will be glad when that's done and will breath a little easier every time its fired up!

Apologies for the essay but hopefully get a wee bit of good luck now with the scirocco. God knows it's overdue!
