Porsche Cayenne - Buying Advice

Hey all,

I started a new job this month which means a solid 3 days per week in the office, so I'm looking for something other than my 718 to commute in.

I am in genuine unknown territory, and well outside my comfort zone buying used cars. So I would really appreciate some advice.

I would like a Cayenne, and my budget would be £10K. Am I committing financial suicide? Does anyone have ownership experience with models in this price bracket?

Realistically it looks like anything suitable is going to be on the mainland, which just adds to the challenges. I just won't have the time to waste going back and forth, and I don't want to get sucked into buying something just because I have taken the time to travel.

The below caught my eye as an example.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Chris

They are solid enough big things. I had one years ago when they were still relatively fresh and it had a water leak that got into some control module for the headlights that was about £1200 to sort.

If I was buying another I would be holding out for one with air suspension.

Also are you prepared for the fuel economy 😂 think about how bad it is then imagine it’s actually worse than that and you are about right 😂

If you upped your budget a bit you could be into a newer model. It would have a lot more miles but they are a much nicer jeep.

If you have never owned a 4x4 before. They are a little more maintenance than a car when it comes to bushes, brakes and tyres etc with the extra weight

A GTS in red still looks special too!

That one looks really nice, I would only be covering 120-150 miles per week, so economy shouldn't be too bad.

Make sure the brake discs aren't rusty as thats the number 1 tip one must remember when one is buying a used automobile, if they are rusty then you must walk away.

The day of my sisters wedding I was ferrying people back and forward from Ballyclare to Carrick. It did 4 round trips and ate £80 of petrol in 2010 😂 now they were very spirited runs but still 😂

Mine was the 4.5 v8

Wait til you're jumping into it rather than the Boxster because it's comfier. I'd be utterly amazed if you got near the 20mpg listed.

Big mate of mine had the Turbo about 10 years ago, he sold his boat to a guy in Donegal and part of the deal it was to be delivered - we’d to stop in Derry for fuel as the Cayenne was bone dry from Bangor. Granted, it was a big cabin cruiser but single digits in the Cayenne. He maintains it was the dearest car he’d ever ran. Now has an SQ5 and it’s not much better.

150 miles per week is about £80-100 on petrol FYI. Some fills were £1 per mile when the fuel prices were up. Longer runs it was better though. Some parts are expensive and it's top tier tax band as well so that's £700 a year. They have the potential to be ruinous.

Reliability on mine was very good. One coil pack, thermostat, battery and some PDCC lines rusted out was all it needed in 3 odd years. I worked on it myself and did almost all jobs. Local Porsche specialists treated me like a knob because presumably it wasn't an aircooled 911 or something, so after one visit I just learned to DIY everything.

Literally everyone told me it would be open wallet surgery but it wasn't too bad in the end. I was fortunate with the market so overall costs were negligible.

Spec wise I'd go for PDCC & air suspension. I'd avoid pano roofs and anything other than black interior. Make sure it has the right options. Some didn't have cruise, HID's or auto lights!

Mechanically there's a few things to be aware of. Bore scoring & the coolant flange on the rear of the engine are biggies.

958's are nicer but worth looking into transfer case issues and if I remember correctly a bolt can snap on the variable valve timing on them too.

Overall I enjoyed it. Air suspension makes a huge difference to comfort & handling and the 4.8 engine is a good step up from the older 4.5's in power, reliabilty & economy.

My mileage now, even with the 3 days per week in the office is on average about 500 miles per month.

That would be more in the spring and summer, but I would definitely be using the Boxster more during those months.

Oh and I towed everywhere with mine. It didn't really impact the economy tbh. It was unreal at squirting past someone doddling along the Portaferry road with 2 ton on the back. No bother at all to it. Easy to forget you're towing at all sometimes.

This is my old car:

Savage mpg, mates dad had two when they first came out. 6-8mpg for the turbo one and the second one wasn't turbo (not sure the model, have S in my mind but not 100%) it did 11-14mpg. He has a heavy enough right foot but that's crazy if doing any mileage worth talking about. Add to potential high repair costs, I'd steer well clear.

Whats wrong with the Diesel ones?

I'm on my 2nd 958.1, between them I've done around 100k Miles i'd say!

Very comfortable especially on 20" wheels with Air Suspension.

I've had a few faults but no show stoppers, easily Mappable to 300hp & returns 37mpg on a run, 19Mpg about town!

Considering changing it soon, finding it too small for a family of 5!

Doesn’t need to be a petrol one, just happens that looks wise it seemed to be petrol ones I liked.

I have had a 958.2 Cayenne for 5+ years now. Absolutely tremendous big bus. It's diesel and on a run to Dublin airport it'll do nearly 40mpg. I've only had one niggle with a coolant leak but that was sorted by McMillan. Other than that I've been fortunate with only servicing, a new battery and a lot of tyres.

I've went to sell it at least 3 times and held onto it each time as I haven't been able to find anything better other than a newer Cayenne which feels no different. ]

Air suspension is a must.

The one you linked to is a Touareg of the same vintage in drag. I owned a Touareg for 14 years and things to look out for are -
  • Center prop shaft bearing
  • Bulkhead drains are clear to prevent water ingress
  • Tyres are all the same and within 2mm side to side and front to back. Mismatched tyres will cause transmission problems
  • Gears shift cleanly up and down. Valve chest faults can cause clunky changes.
They have a 95L fuel tank so hard to put fuel to if thats a concern. I've a full height oem dog guard sitting here will fit the earlier Touareg/ Cayenne if you decide to get one .

Do they not give you a car with the job? Or a car scheme at least?

Nope, I’m office based. Haven’t had a company car for years, and that was because I traveled to customer sites each day. Certainly wouldn’t want that kind of role again.

We got one recently, 2010 3.0 V6 diesel with 115K for around the £8.5K mark.

We’ve had it a few months now and it’s been faultless. Drives very well and is comfortable enough. We stuck an Apple Carplay unit in it and it’s made it modern enough for her to scoot about in.

Even the diesel is doing low 20’s around the town but that is on 22’s.

Great car for the money , like any over 10 year old jeep it will need work but a lot of the ones I know drive diesel cayennes and never seem to give any trouble

I bought @Coog one off him, was reliable but wasn’t really for me after the initial buzz of it being an absolute weapon wore off tbh.

I’ve owned alot of uneconomical cars but it just took the piss 😂.

Getting out of the L322 in to it made it just seem a bit pointless, it has all the downsides of a massive jeep but just feels like your in a big heavy car if that makes sense. Yes thats good for driving fast, but if u want to do that then just buy a car. Only l322 owners would probably understand tbh.

I was left feeling it was a very good 1 car person car but I had no purpose for it in a cheap fleet.

And I worn you coming from a nearly new porsche, only get into the cheap expensive car life if you’ve your eyes wide open. If you run to the dealer everytime there is a nigel (cant be spelt right 😂) you’ll find urself broke in anything let alone a cayenne. Its a way of life 😂

The missus said she fancies one so I’m interested in this thread. I’ll be going diesel.

Sounds like I’ll have to take it to work and fill it up there 😇
