My jack is leaking oil and I need a replacement.

Are there any decent ones for around the £30 odd mark or not? I don't want to be spending £100 as it rarely gets used. Ideally I'm hoping to get a 4 post lift when we get the garage built too, so don't need anything fancy.

I haven't really looked at mine, but like other hydraulic things, would there be some sort of plug that would allow me to refill it with oil and continue using? I'd rather have a new one anyway, but if theres nothing cheap then it may be my only option to fix mine.

Yeah you should be able to fill it up. Look for a plug and just fill it with hydraulic oil

That one I got from Halfrauds was £30. Handy enough.

There should be a nipple on the jack, you twist it to lower the car and all. Either that or the piston seal has gone. Either way, I'd replace for peace of mind.

Is the oil topped up via the nipple? Pretty sure its not leaking from there. Its ancient though.

Yup, you can buy jack oil, not sure what's special about it, but it's there for sale!

Aye, they have a couple even cheaper too.

On the basis of the Motor Factors thread, I must try some of the local places.

@Woodcutter do you do any basic jacks?

I've been using one like that for years. It does the job and had been grand for what I need it to do. Obviously not a patch on the proper big jack at the workshop but for quickly whipping a wheel off or swapping pads, etc it's done me rightly. Don't forget axle stands.

Already have axle stands of a similar vintage, still 100% though.

Mines just used for changing the odd wheel/winter wheels etc too.

I got this jack from snap on.

Fast lift in only 3/4 pumps when unloaded

Those lightweight alloy jacks aren't really any good unless you need to carry it about tbh your much better with a good heavy duty jack.

As the name of it, it's a bit of a beast. Bigger than it looks in photo but not ridiculous

I choose this over the blue point one as it seemed far better built and has 2 large pistons rather than one

The Blue Point jack is twin piston as well, and it lifts at the same rate as the Beast. I tried them side by side on Alan's lorry a few weeks back.

We don't have any ramps and rely heavily on our jacks every day, and for the workshop, those 2 ton Blue Point jacks are fantastic, and they get used for everything from Fiestas to Shoguns, and Caddys to Crafters, and everything with a blown turbo in between...

The 3 ton Snap On jack is too big and bulky, and unnecessary for cars, jeeps and light commercials IMO.

It's big but as I said it's far better built than the blue point one.

Iirc the blue point one had one large and one smaller piston. Prob difference in the 2 ton and 3 ton tbh

But I also tried them side by side and to say there is no difference is not true at all!

Given that they're the same company (Blue Point & Snap On), I'd say they're likely made in the same place by the same people.

Either way, Snap On tools aren't what they once were, and their quality has definitely deteriorated, so it's quite hard to justify the extra price tag for their name to be fair.

I'm just going from personal experiences of using Snap On tools from 10-20 years ago which was fantastic to their current stuff like the Flank Drive spanners spreading the jaw when a set of much cheaper Bergen spanners didn't, or the shallow 6 point sockets being softer than a set of Britool sockets we have, not to mention the numerous Torx bits, hex bits and screw drivers that have broken... They are great for impact guns (1/4" and 1/2" lithium ion) and ratchets (when yet done sheer the teeth), and specialist bits like lambda sockets and cable pliers, but that's about it.

Need a new jack as my halfords one broke after about 2 months. Looking for a low entry one and something relatively light for talking to track days although if heavier is better quality is take a heavier one..

Saw this and thought it looked good, anyone any experience?

Liftmaster 2.5 Ton Aluminium Low Profile QuickLift Trolley Racing Jack by LiftMaster Liftmaster 2.5 Ton Aluminium Low Profile QuickLift Trolley Racing Jack: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

I bought that a few months ago, probably used about 20 times so far with no issues, does what it's supposed to do.

Halfords.....no no no no...........

Got the little 2.5 tonne one last minute when the brute i inherited from my dad shat itself.

Always use axle stands too out of habit. So when I was under wiffey's Mazda doing some sump work etc.....was quite surprised to hear the axle stands taking a bit more load......slightly startled (i dirtied myself)......i scrambled out and watched as the Halfords one was slowly dropping.

Have tried it a few times now......doing the same thing every time.

Will be returning it asap.

Would love on the of the SGS ones but the shipping is the price of the jack again :worried:

It's that time again, I'm getting a bit more tinker space round the side and I'd like a longer reach trolley jack.
