If Mercedes AMG are quieting down then what does that mean for the world of car makers? I've always thought AMG cars came with purposeful aural exhaust systems, they were tame when cruising along, but by feck they bark when pressed on!

As a whole I doubt it will affect petrol head as most will likely look to the aftermarket almost immediately, but certainly gone are the days of nasty high displacement V8s a la American muscle and soon to be the euro premiums.

I'm sure the new AMG/M/RS range all drive fantastically, but I wish there were more of a diversity in engine size, 4.0 for the Merc and Audi fleet with 3.0 6s for the BMW's

It's one of the reasons why I was so swayed by the car I have now, when will we ever see another wagon with a 5.0 twin turbocharged V10? Sadly I don't think we ever will, and frankly I think V8s are running their course too, it'll not be long until they're a rarity and only come in the most expensive of cars.

Will we be living in a dystopian type of future like Mad Max once some crazy nuclear fusion experiment goes wrong? 🤔

Or will electric take over completely, leaving internal combustion cars to literally rot away into nothing.

Probably this.

Emissions (and not just CO2) regs are getting tighter and tighter and to be honest it's probably to the betterment of the planet and it's inhabitants.

Like you though, it won't stop me buying stupid dinosaur burning tanks for as long as I can.

I hope that as long as there is oil in the ground, they'll want to sell it, and an old car is the perfect tool to burn it.

Worldwide light vehicle sales projection from work by power train. From IHS Markit who are the goto people for automotive forecasting.

Interestingly there will be still as many IC cars build 10 years from now as there was 15 years ago due to growing markets.

Pure IC about for a while yet. Hybrid IC either via mild low voltage hybrid or full blown hybrid will take off soon.
EV goes big in 2025 and plenty of time to save for a hydrogen model yet.

They reckon only 50% of cars in Europe will be pure IC by 2030.

Pah
I just don’t see electric meeting needs.
I need a 4x4 that can drive 40 miles to the farm/woods pull a tree/logs out and tow a couple of ton back the 40 miles in one trip. When this is possible il consider electric.
Most EV's aren't even rated to tow currently. Long way off yet

The model X will tow 2250 kg, which I believe is already more than a CRV. Presumably it would have enough torque to pretty much pull any of our current ICE 4x4's up the side of a cliff and would empty most quick cars on the trip home from the woods. The quick one does 60 in less than 3 seconds.

Oh and it'd do your wood trip 3 times before needing a top-up.

I think the only major stumbling block is the extortionate purchase prices.

Towing with electric will be fantastic.

Should say it also needs to be a competitive 5k or less and be as reliable second hand 😂.

5000kg tow capacity and 0 - 60 in 3 seconds enough?

Ford F150 and its competitors going EV option very soon too. All with the UK added extra price tag too I'm sure.

And back to reality for a minute. £78k for a model X that how any people will buy? The fairly standard EVs of today like the Leaf and Zoe, simply aren't type approved to tow

Electric car prices will drop. As battery tech matured too, they should in theory be reliable even second hand. The only thing that can go wrong really is the electrics, the drive train is pretty basic in comparison to a Euro VI diesel for example.

Will just need to get better at using a multimeter and soldering iron rather than just spanners.

How long do the batteries on EVs normally last before they need replaced? I assume they are mental prices to replace which will be a nightmare for buying second hand?

Im three years into EV ownership, and apart from range (which is improving) I can’t see any advantages of an ICE car if I’m honest, for normal day to day driving.

I would have one in a heartbeat, but as said above it's the extortionate costs at the minute

Not really. If you look at the likes of Prius' that have been around for a while there's specialists out there that can swap out individual faulty cells. You can buy refurbished cells on eBay for like £30 and it doesn't look like rocket science to replace them, in comparison to say switching out a cam belt or replacing a fuel tank or something.

The way I see it is that we're in the transition period in much the same way we moved from horse to car with all the same reservations and smart arsery and everything in-between from the hardliners. Blacksmiths turn mechanics, mechanics turn electrical engineers. The technology will become more familiar, spares will be easier come by, they'll become the norm and ICE cars will fade into memory to the reserve of old schoolers and old timers.

I'm not jumping ship yet though. The time to run & drive big engined motors is now. Some of us will look back at the 2010/2020's and regret not buying and running that V6 or V8 while petrol was 'only' £1.40 a litre and big engined cars were still easily available at sensible money. There's plenty of time for electric and I'm in absolutely no panic to move just yet.

The lure of a supercharged Range Rober is keeping me awake at night atm!

Could equal it up with an EV for the wife. Bit like salad and chips really.

I'm not fussed on them tbh, but a charged V8 is a good thing in my book regardless of which chassis it's in

Would prefer a Jag SVR myself but still the noise is insane from them

Neighbour has a RRS SVR in blue and it's quite tidy

My kids are getting quite into pony riding atm. I’m looking for a positive slant to it!! Cayenne or RR(S) is clearly needed to tow a small pony about the place.
