Looking for something interesting for £1500 max.

Hot/warm hatch or 4x4 probably my preference but would consider any type of car really.

Something with a bit of character. Must be mechanically sound and have MOT. No diesel family cars - have two already 😴

Thanks

Mini Cooper S (r53) probs be higher mileage and rough round the edges but plenty of character being supercharged

I love these games.
Here’s my choices. All for sale in NI.

BMW Z3

Toyota Celica. Maybe not the fastest but unusual choice and seems like a lot cool for the money.

Golf MK4 V6 Motion. Warm hatch with a nice engine. Also AWD handy for the winter.

TT? Not so much of a hair dresser car when it’s a coupe.

172/182?

MX5?
Would love another 182 but they seem to be climbing in money. If anyone knows of a decent MX5 for my budget, would certainly be interested.

Anyone rate an ST150 Fiesta?

Also tempted by a Jimny thinking £1500 might get you a leggy early one but you would need to remortgage the house ffs. Range Rovers are cheaper ffs

Yeah I fear I’ve missed the 2.0 Clio boat also.
Very keen to hear people’s views on the ST150. Most advertised have had work done so a healthy competitor to the 172/182 option surely. Fezza only weighs an extra 80kg.

Regarding Jimnys you are not joking. My dad bought this one last week, didn’t even need it but it’s not often you get them around the grand mark anymore so jumped at it.

Great news
You could get a Vauxhall Belmont that identifies as a mk3 escort 😂

Had an st150 for a while as a daily, great wee car. Not a flying machine but decent enough power to be fun on twisties

I paid £400 for a Jimny and it lasted 5 years before being sold on for twice that. Fun wee cars but wouldn't want to drive one daily. Few decent looking MX5s for sale on facebook at the minute. Look out for rust though!

I had a couple of mk6 Fiesta ST's. Bought one after I sold my Integra and wasn't expecting much but my god they are a fun car for what they are. Only car that has given me instant confidence in what it's doing from the off, just throw it into a corner and know you'll come out the other side.

Dead as a dodo in a straight line which is a shame, but they really do make you smile when going round the corners, the suspension is typical sporty Mazda. Brakes are ok, could be better but not the worst. You sit quite high in them which is weird at first but it's all to do with centre of gravity or something I think? Also it's a Mazda engine with timing chain so less to worry about. I enjoyed my first one so much I bought another a couple of years later.

I've messaged about a TT 225. Without diving into the depths of some 1.8T forum, is there any particular variant/year of that engine that should be avoided?

May also message about that Golf but when I see a car for sale in Strabane I normally scroll on past - its the distance and the fact it normally looks like scrap. High standards for a Larne man but anyway....

The TT 225 engines are both good (APX and BAM). Unless you're doing a lot of big tuning I wouldn't worry.
