Some styling changes, more than enough to distinguish between them if this is to be believed...

The new one will look exactly the same as Tesla design isn’t exactly radical so just save the money and buy the current one.

Under the skin its a very different car, rumored to comprise of two mega-castings to reduce the manufacturing cost and so potentially be cheaper than the outgoing model. Front and rear facelift, matrix LED headlights, new dash, ventilated seats and a 10% increase in battery capacity are the main noticeable changes I have heard about.

Personally, I would hold off until the new model and pricing is released and then you can decide which is the best buy. There will be some old stock circulating for at least another few months because they're still manufacturing it.

Bearing this in mind, A 2020 Model 3 SR for £15k early next year with what 40k miles on it. That would be a great buy.

The worry is what can go wrong when they’re out of warranty and how much it would cost to fix it.

A cheap EV screams potential huge bills to me.

Think I’ll stick to leasing when it’s time to replace the ix3, that’s if any good deals are about.

Tesla Battery and Drivetrain is 8 years warranty which I think puts mind at ease.

On that note quite a few Model SssessssSss with 180k+ appearing now. Bet they are holding up as good as if not better than the ICE counterparts with similar miles.

Trouble is, when your £15k Tesla is 8 years old and the warranty runs out, it will be worth £0 as no-one will want to touch it. An 8 year old ICE car will still be worth something as parts will still be available and people will be able to work on it

I’d say we’ll see independent garages either specialising in older EV’s or at least with the ability to manage battery work.

Carefully
There are plenty of ten year old Teslas advertised/selling for £20-£30k. I’m sure it will be similar to some people avoiding cars when they hit 99k miles, as if they blow up at 100k.

There may well be battery degradation issues at but surely that’s a reasonable check to make (battery health) and potential future replacement cost you’ll have in mind when buying.

There’ll be ICE cars out there that people consider ticking time bombs too (rightly or wrongly) once warranty runs out. Particularly performance stuff with ceramic brakes, multiple turbos and fancy multiple clutch gear boxes.

A 9 year old Model S is still around £25k. You can replace the batteries, you don't just put the car in the dump.

Not sure on value, but as said above, realistically who is going to want to touch them? Far too many potential issues which could run into tens of thousands.

Looks like they are 20 odd grand and the cheapest one I can find is sold, so yes I guess they do. Not sure how that compares to a similar 15 year old luxury motor which was similar sort of pricing new like a 7 series. I’m guessing… favourably.

I often wonder what the conversation was like when horseless carriages were making a more abundant appearance on our roads.

I assume something like “at least you can eat your horse once it hits 100k miles. Those machine things will never catch on”

Audi approved used come with an 8 year 100k battery warranty once it goes through their cycle testing procedure and you get a certification. If it goes under 85% battery health they’ll replace the individual cells no problem. I’m assuming if they can do that then we’ll see more and more garages doing the same in 5-10 years time from now and it’s not a case of a whole battery unit needs done. With less overall general maintenance needed with electric you’d imagine ownership cost will probably work out similar as currrent ICE when you consider belts, services etc

Are they able to do Dublin airport and back on a charge yet? Of everything that’s the one thing that’s irritated me the most about ours.
Ours is doing 200m 60-70mph miles real world. No chance I'd do an airport run in it never mind what it will lose in winter.

The reversing camera looks like they pinched it from a 2010 A6, the wireless phone charger Is annoying and rarely works. The menu system is pretty annoying and it's the worst sat nav system I've used including a 2008 Audi A5. It's brisk but not super EV sharp and I hate the steering. It won't register the car on the app despite multiple attempts across multiple devices and it charges slower than an ipace or Tesla model 3 even on public 22kW chargers it seems very slow to charge.

Honestly really regretting not getting a model Y but my wife likes it and her friends think it's fancy so that's pretty much it's job done.

Jeez. Not good. We’ve been able to look past it’s foibles due to the very good price. The Q4 has over twice the range so will soon find out if it can do that run or not

That's kind of how I'm looking at it, it's relatively cheap motoring. If I'd dropped full retail price on it out of my own money I'd be absolutely gutted. I think I got swayed by the whole "q8 etron" rebranding when it's really just an OG etron with some improvements. It'll do what we need 99 percent of the time but we literally just did Belfast to dunfanaghy from full to just under 50 percent range driving very sensibly in summer. No chance it's getting anywhere near back again on one charge. In 90 mins on a 22kW ESB charger (and 10 quid) it gained 40 mile range which is so poor I almost think something much be wrong with it. It charges extremely slowly when almost full also. Tesla pulls 50 miles per hour on 22kW IE almost double the rate. It's just a generation or two behind. The Q4 is likely a much better option.

Is this a newer q8 etron (95kwh battery) you are referring to? Ours is getting around 240-250 real world to a charge. Driver assist steering is a melt yes as it tends to pull you about the road at times and the chargers are the usc type instead of usb but apart from that we really like ours

Yeh it's a week old. I wasn't even going to start in to the stupid driver assist as I thought I'd moaned enough already.

Why not seek out a 50kw charger? There are a couple in Letterkenny and your 45 mins on there would have added a decent range. 22kW when out and about unless parking for a few hours is pretty pointless.

Wouldn’t bother with a 22kw at all unless I was really stuck.

Because I'm nearly 30 mile from letterkenny and 200 metres from a 22kW? At etron economy and charging pace that's about 12 quid and an hour wasted not to mention the driving time.
I just wanted enough to get me home, not seeking out to "brim" the thing at 50p per kWh.

So the charger did your job and if you needed more charge you could have left it on if it was so close to you. Sounds like there wasn’t any issue 🤔
