Smashing wee wagon. As you said nothing quite like the 90’s interiors. Keep the updates coming!

ZX update:

So, my plan to update this thread fell by the wayside last year so thought I'd get the update done and dusted in one go so here goes, hopefully makes for interesting reading for some! My last post of Jan 2018 didn't exactly tell the whole story of the ZX ownership (think i had planned to get into detail but never did!). The ZX has been off the road since August 2017, on the way to the car show at the old DeLorean factory it broke down on me, just lost all drive, thankfully stranded only a few miles from home but had to call for rescue and my dads trusty XM turned up:

Straight to my mechanic, found that the fuel sender was broken so basically I had run the car out of fuel! At the same time as carrying out the fuel sender work, I got him to carry out a full service on the car along with timing belt change and setup and a couple of other general maintenance work. I was very thankful that’s all it was…..until he gave me the bad news. The MoT was coming up so was getting him to check it over and i got the dreaded call “Graham…..you better come down to the workshop”. He found that the underneath of the car was going in typical french style, all 4 jacking points were gone along with holes into the front passenger footwell. I decided to go ahead and get everything repaired, this will be a longterm keeper and i wanted it right. After stripping the car of all the interior and fuel tank etc, I sent the car to NNI Auto Refinishing, (Aaron and Jonny) who worked their magic getting it back in shape, their update photos are below….as you can see it was in quite bad shape:

I got the car back towards the end of 2017 and unfortunately it sat in the driveway for a few months due to other commitments.

Fast forward to June 2018, managed to get the car back to my mechanic to get it running again. So fuel tank etc was refitted, any brake pipes needing changed were done including handbrake cables. Brembo discs and pads were also fitted all round. The only issue he found was a broken front spring and we couldn’t get an original so Mark in Motorsport & Spares Ballymena got us a pair of Apex springs, I had been wanting to keep it original but needs must so these were fitted. Also, thanks to a fellow RMS member, I sourced an original Supersprint backbox for the car - the exhaust was the only thing that i did want to change on the car and couldn’t believe it when @kristen had one for a ZX 16v! This was fitted at the same time as the above and I got the car back running sweeter than it ever did.

During last summer we moved house so again the ZX was left to sit on the driveway until we got the new garage sorted:

After getting accepted for an indoor slot at Dubshed 2019 it thought this would give me the kick up the backside i needed to get the car back in shape and on the road again. March 2019 and the car still hadn’t the interior refitted nor an MoT so the pressure was on! Got interior fitted and started into the bodywork, the car hadn’t been washed since the end of 2017 and had only spent some of that time in the garage under cover so it was a bit of a mess but after I got stuck into it, it came up not too bad, iron cleansed and carried out a minor paint correction on it:

During the interior fit process I managed to break the original gearknob - amazingly these are one of the few parts you can buy from the dealer so got a new one from Hursts:

Next up to get it show ready was the wheels - they had never been refurbished before (you could still see the original registration (still on the car) etched onto the surface of each wheel). But they were looking worse for wear and in behind they were badly pitted flaking. A new place has opened up round the corner from my work on Boucher Road called The Wheel Specialist so I took them there and Matt & Elaine really looked after me, i would highly recommend them to anyone. They aren’t the cheapest but like paintwork you get what you pay for with wheel refurbishment. The wheels were completely stripped, powder coated and painted and lacquered as close to the original colour as possible. The plastic centre caps posed a bit of a problem though so extra time was spent on these as they are a big feature of the wheels but thankfully when the work was complete they turned out fantastic:

After the wheels were sorted that was the car finished (except the refitting of the side skirts!) so MoT booked and i have to admit to smiling the whole way to the MoT centre driving it on the road again. And the MoT guy was a fan too although not enough to pass it - it failed on the ABS light NOT coming on at all. He even took it a test drive to test the system out so looks like the ABS isn’t working at all. I was really annoyed to say the least but pleased that everything else passed on the test. I managed to get the car to Dubshed though and was really pleased with the good response it got!

You would never of thought it was hiding a few horrors below the surface .loomed immaculate before ,just goes to show what’s really going on .if you had of said the wiring loom fell apart I would of believed that quicker .still it’s sorted now and it’s a great looking car .These were so sharp back in the day with all 160hp or whatever it was lol.

Lovely example of what’s now a very rare car, had a good look round it at Dubshed, very impressed but I see what you mean about the side skirts needing to be fitted. I’ve ABS on mine if you need to borrow the pump or whatever to troubleshoot yours. If I remember they were standard on the valvers and an option on the Volcane.
I aim to sort mine out over the winter - needs a good dent man and some remedial paint. I’d love to see them side by side at a show!

Bit of hassle there G. Glad its on its toes again! My Volcane definitely did not have ABS, I blame that and the remoulds the previous owner fitted for its untimely demised through some concrete fence posts (n)

You were just behind me at Dubshed (I had the 2 Nova Sports). Had a bit of a nosey around it, and loved it, was looking really well.

Thank you, yes I remember the Nova's with the similar plates, thought they were both very cool, good placement of cars from the same sort of era as well.

Yeah I know what you mean, I was really annoyed about it but glad its sorted now, well worth the expense as I think these types of cars are worth the investment. Yep they were, a load of road tests against its rivals often put the ZX as the best drivers car but other stuff let it down like build quality although i have to say having had a load of Citroens down through the years this one is very very tight inside.

This is what is great about forums, plenty of people willing to help out! It may come to that, I'm going to get it back to the mechanics to check out properly, if he can't sort it then might try a dedicated auto electrician and see what the score is. Definitely would be good to see them side by side at a show!

Thanks! Yeah I would not reckon the ZX came off good against fence posts of any type! Lol yes, tyres are also important - this one thankfully running Michelins and Conti's.

I found they don’t really like trees either...
