“AC Cobra”-ish. I haven’t recently won the lottery, so this is actually a Pilgrim Sumo MK3 by Pilgrim Motorsport.

I’ve had a list of childhood poster cars I’d like to own one day and I’ve tried to slowly make my way through those, and the next one that I wanted to tackle was an AC/Shelby Cobra.

I’ve been looking at them for quite a while but it’s difficult to find the right spec, colour, engine, build quality, kit vs factory build etc.
I had awful thoughts of a big block 7.5L and an affordable one popped up, but thankfully someone put a deposit on it before I could be foolish enough to buy it.

I really wanted one in blue with white stripes, Halibrand style Cobra wheels, cream interior, manual five speed, and obviously a V8. (Shockingly there are a few out there with pinto engines).
I went back and forward between an iron Chevy engine block and the aluminium Rover block, and ended up deciding to go with the latter due to the weight savings, local available knowledge, as well as numerous other things.

Eventually this one popped up at a very reasonable price and a deal was done!
Boat to Scotland this morning and a very quick turnaround straight onto the return boat, followed by a very cold 70mile drive home.

It has a fantastic old school V8 cammy burble on tick over. Given the wet roads on the drive home I didn’t get a chance (read have the balls) to give it a proper wide open throttle blast as it feels like it’ll take a while getting used to the unique blend of torque and handling. I’ve a feeling that if I drove this like I drove the Tiger I probably wouldn’t see my next birthday.

TL;DR, V8 noises, spinny wheels, many smiles.

Will get more pics up when it’s got a good clean inside and out and had a few adjustments made. And a video of course, when I get a chance.

Thought it was youtuber AdamC's there for a second.

My Father in law had a Dax Cobra years ago and it was such a cool thing, the noise and presence of these are just 👌

Amazing that! I have looked at these so many times over the years but lack of any knowledge has always stopped. Hope I get to see this at some point. Health to enjoy.

Unreal 🥰 What Rover derivative is she? As in 3.5/3.9 etc
Would be insane with a TVR 500 spec engine!

Actually nearly called in with you on the way home because it could do with a paint correction but I decided to race home the M2 before it rained! Will try and get up some dry day.

They definitely require a bit of reading and there are lots of examples you wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Especially in private sales, this came from a dealer with a folder crammed full of history, but I'd been talking to a guy selling a 4.0 TVR engined one and after getting the plate of him and looking it up it was originally a pinto engined one, which means it was a MK1 and didn't have the chassis for a V8 - never mind being incorrectly registered with DVLA.

Just the standard 3.5, had looked at a few ranging from 3.9/4.1/4.6/4.9 but none of them had the spec I wanted. I also really don't think it needs anymore power :joy: (famous last words). It's not by any means quick, but getting the power down becomes an issue with the torque.

Me and @Phil_D were lusting over so many of these at the Classic Car Shows in NEC last few times we went. Incredible machines and so customisable.

My kid brother was probably one of them, he has a great video of him and a couple of others driving through the port tunnel, V8 sounds bouncing all around. They had a Garda escort for some of the journey, some special parade through Dublin they were part of. His was a Dax Cobra, Jaguar running gear and then he had Jim Robinson (JRV8, Ballymena) build him a new engine for it. He sold it a few years ago, he misses it greatly.

JRV8 is the main engine supplier to Pilgrim, was surprised to hear they came reconditioned from someone in NI!

Thats Awesome, love the Cobra and Cobra replicas. And lets face it, its probably just as good as an actual cobra.

I reckon one of these has to be about as much fun as you can have in a car.

Lovely!! Always fancied one of these too at some stage. As above poster said I doubt you can have any more fun in anything else on a summers day
