Right, Tufty and me had a big discussion about this earlier...

Which one do you prefer and why?

and Give reason/s why you dont like the other.

Give proper reasons, none of this "Fix Or Repair Daily" bollocks.

I prefer Ford because they make mostly nice looking cars. Their engines and gearboxes are fairly solid and if anything does go wrong, they are cheaper to fix! To drive there is a lot more "feel" than a VW. More exiting when u give it a bit of the wellington.

Don't like VW because they are a bit too bulky looking for my liking. I actually find them quite boring to look at. and from my limitied drivin experience in VW's i found drivin it another particularily boring experience.

VW = Boring

richy now r days all parts for all cars r priced around the same so that don`t make a big difference. exiting i think not there more lift outta a 1.3 polo than there is outta a mondeo ztec. engines r a let dwn in some fords while othere do live up to fords so called good name. the focus tdci is ment to b a so called rival of the tdi golfs in no shape r form is this car rival its simply very plain to look at and its rathere dull inside also it`s not the nicest of cars to drive

vw`s on the othere hand vw r an al round nice car i now some my not b to everyones taste but u can`t plz every one. being an owner of a mk 2 gti i can say it is fun when u put the foot dwn cus it does have a fair bit of get up n go also ive drove the new skoda fabia vrs and this is a fun and quick car to drive.

Fords are prone to rust, quite badly ! But ford have made a few of the most desirable cars ever Escort Cosworth, Mustang........ and one of the most wanted cars in the world (if u can find one) the Ford RS200. Fords are reasonably easy and cheap to fix.
Ford engines seem to find their way into many kit cars etc. ie zetecs and the ford running gear is often used in the building process as it is cheap. The old RST engines are relatively simply to tune and provide decent power for not much cash.

Vdubs seem to be gettin lardier with every revised launch of a car, Golf for example.........the Mk1 was small and nimble, mk2 beefier and so on up to the now mucho lardy Golf mkV.
U cant forget some of the Vdubs have had sum nice engines, the GTI and the ever gorgeous VR6.

Neither Ford or VW has remarkable build quailty. Each make has their good points and their weak.

Personally I think it's something rooted in history that doesn't necessarly reflect the present. VW have the rep of being well put together, although not great on the extras, whereas the ford has the rep of being a fairly cheap to run everyday family motor.

Nowadays I think they are both as good as each other - with each company having a better model than the other somewhere along the line.

Get into a focus tdci and blast down a back road, then get into a golf tdi and blast down the same road at the same pace and the difference will be very obvious.

VW haven't built a good drivers car since the mk1 and 2 golf gti. While ford's whole marketing strategy is building cars centred around driver enjoyment.

Put a chip in your golf gt tdi and never look back. Well, to be honest both marques have become more watered down. The GTi and RS guises are no longer what they once where - they've lost the fun factor. Both manufacturers make good cars no doubt, but even VWs reputation of reliability and build quality is now a thing of the past, as other companies such as Ford have got just as good. As Ciaran says, both are as good (or as average) as each other!

Afraid I have to disagree about the RS guise, andy, Focus RS is meant to be great fun and is a pretty damn well spec'd motor with a 2.0 turbo and brembos, leather/alcantara buckets. etc..

Ford:

Zetec engines are very reliable and take a lot of abuse, pretty straight forward and cheap to fix. Has had some of the best cars, inc the Cosworth and RS brands, and the new ST range. As far as looks go I think most Ford's look pretty good, how good does an RS Focus or Escort Cosworth look?

However the older models were a bit touch and go as far as reliability is concerned, and amongst the nice motors there were also the drones of old rubbish rusty fiestas mondeos and escorts which were imo budget cars with few frills..

VW:

Fairly pleasing to the eye throughout the years, although I have to say the newest models (I.e. MK5 golf onwards) are a bit ugly! Started off the hot hatch revolution. Renowned for great solid build quality. They also hold their value a lot better than equivalent fords. The TDi engines are simply amazing!

However they are heavy old beasts and are quite high insurance compared with other equivalent cars. The range IMO has also become a tad boring, with the so-called GTi's not really being that fast..

Overall Im a Ford man which could be slightly biased due to me driving one, but from personal experience the focus is a great car, it handles well its easy insured, quite nippy (1.8 zetec) and looks very good too!

Cue Daz

well i have to remain on the fence on this one.

i have a Ford Ka with a 1.7 Zetec engine, H&R coilovers, big brakes and 17inch superleggaras which is the most fun to drive

whereas my vw mk3 tdi 5dr was bought as a solid reliable workhorse, which is getting filled with ice 8)

simply put
ford- driving fun
vw- solid tank! :p

Mmmmnnnn, they are both presently a much of a muchness but on price only: VW's are pricey to buy, insure and to get parts for, but I think that they are trying to recreate a new brand name for themselves as an up market car manufacturer, which is not really the case. Fords are easier to buy, insure and to get parts for!

Like u's have poinyed out, each marque has had good periods and bad periods, fords had hey days with the mk 1and 2 escort and then the 80's with the RS's, VW had hey days with the GTi's and VR6's, again they also built a good reputation for build qulaity but today this is less of an issue of an issue as manufacturing processes are so similar between companies now. Personally i'm a ford man, within mid ulster there is a definite sense that if you drive a VW, you are driving sumthin special, this genuinesly annoys me as every TDi golf, bora and passet sold in the area is sold from an importer and in the long run a market flooded with cheaper VW's ain't gonna do second values any favours and if everyone else is driving one too, it ain't really that special? At the lower end of the sale, fords better specced and better powered ( i think the 1.2 polo is 55 bhp!), but at the end of the day everyone has a different reason for buyin a car i persoannly feel that fords represent better value for money and a better drivers car.

VW never built any real aggressive cars like fords
rs 200
rs cosworth seirra
rs 500
rs cosworth escort
rs focus
s1 rs turbo
s2 rs turbo
rs turbo fiesta

all the vw's are over rated and expensive and they drive themselves u will never have as much fun in any vw as u would with any of the cars above

how many of those will the common driver be able to afford though???

i think thats why i would prefer VW because they are well equipped and sturdy and have effective performance, at the end of the day when are you gonna need 300bhp from a cossie apart from a race track???

as said before also, the gap is decreasing because almost everyone is making well built cars unlike 10 years ago
