From reading up a bit they don't seem to have the oomph to get the lift started with a car on it.
Might be worthwhile looking at a replacement single phase motor. Might just be as cheap/ handy?

If you weren't restricted with the ceiling would that lift go higher?

depends on what invertor you use surely? they are all rated for output
