Ticking from Zetec engine

Over the past few days my engine has started making a ticking noise, which SEEMS to be coming from the cams or at least the top part of the engine.

Ive been told it could be noisy fuel injectors (fuel rail sits right beside cams), air in the tappets or worn tappets..

Car is a '01 Focus 1800 Zetec with 39k on the clock..


Anyone able to shed light on the subject? Kinda worried cos I dont like rattles from my engine! :?

lol, yeuk rattles from a zetec, brings back bad memmories, last time i had a ticking from the fez it was the big end, had to replace the engine.

does it get louder/quicker as you accelerate /rev?

it could be worn cams if your reving the **** out of it or it has had the **** reveed out of it when cold also could have blocked oil feed to the camshaft this is wat was wrong with the corsa only a dribble of oil was getting through so the cam didnt move slowly just crunched away till i had nice big lumps missing out of it

no doubt its run low on oil at some point as this problem always rears its head after this has happened!those engines tend to use the oil just like most of 16valves or any engine you rev the tits off!more than likely the tappets or the cams

i would have said its the oils just gone down a bit especially if your running on magnetec or something good i had the same problem with the fiesta top her up and it should be alright again.

as said before, could be the hydraulic tappets.

my fez does it when its low on oil really bad ticking that got louder the more you reved.

but the worring thing also (sounded class though apart form the ticking) it gave the exhast the same note as a Impreza, no idea why though???

Is it only when you start it from cold ?
Or all the time?

Gets louder when the oil level is low.

Really need to get those tappets set :roll:

Engine did run a bit low on oil about 3 months ago but I topped her up again and have checked it since and shes been fine. Changed the oil the day before yesterday but hasnt helped the ticking noise (only started on friday!)

Noise gets a bit louder/faster was you rev, and seems to be pretty intermittant. Sometimes its there and other times its not, doesnt seem to be any relation to whether the engines hot or cold tho..

Guna have it looked at tomorrow morning hopefully..

Anyone firmly believe they know what it is?

Had a main dealer look at it today and their sound technical advice was "forget about it til it gets worse"

Apparently its most likely just a tappet playing up..Ah well, when cams appear on the list these little things will be fixed anyway

Hmm I had the same problem with the puma and the ford dealer told me it was a tappit, then it got over a few months and it is now away getting fixed, have yet to hear whats wrong with it but was prob big ends, cant say i am looking forward to getting the bill. :cry:

how loud is it? the clutch sometimes makes a tapping noise when in neutral in zetecs. oh and i dont think zetecs have hydraulic tappets? i heard they have solid lifters?
