@PeteMoore

I see a place on FB called Media Blast NI, who seem to offer that sort of thing. No idea how good they are though.

it is definitely something worth paying the extra for to ensure its right.

Rustbusters - go for the soda - about £450-500 from memory
CM Blasting in downpatrick/crossgar direction - he is mobile but does a fantastic job - about £350 for a complete car inside/out/underneath

would you get the blaster to put a coat of primer on the bare tin?

Think it be best. Bare metal will rust while ya stand looking at it. Quicker you get a coat on it the better.

That's what I thought but I've heard some people say the soda will leave a film on it that the primer won't adhere to and can cause issues down the line

Unless you've a very dry heated garage....you wouldnt want to be leaving bare metal at all !

It will need some sort of coating asap unless you absolutely need it left bare for work or welding etc.

I've done some research into this recently. For other reasons I decided to strip the car manually as it was only the exterior. But....

From what I can gather/been told. Soda will leave a film on it, which can blister years down the line. The only way to remove it is to wash it with warm water... but then you have a wet steel panel, which would concern me. It would need baked to dry it out entirely... or perhaps left a while. Ph blasters in dunganon/cookstown direction seem very knowledgeable about it. £1000 for a full shell though. And I think they prefer to use very fine media (not soda) depending on the job, eliminating the problems associated with soda. They were doing a mk2 escort rally car when I visited... you know the 100k type escort build. Only one man in the place is allowed to work on cars and said the was able to do it without 'any' warping. And they will blast panels separately which would keep the cost down... £125 per hour mind

On the other hand I seen a job done by a guy for 300 (admittedly I didn't see it before), blasted, not soda.... and quite frankly... the car was a write off!

So choose wisely

A friend of mine got a BMW 2002 done with some sort of blasting but it was in water, made a good job of it and never rusted.

i think its less to do with the type of blasting, rather the skill of the person doing it, probably taking longer, using finer material and hence costing more. rather than someone who blasts gates.

I think id decide what to do depending on the car and the job your looking to do. If its something high end, id spend the money and have it done by someone who is skilled and can guarantee their work. If its a lower value car, your handy and prepared to spend 2-3 days on it, id have someone/anyone cheap blast the floors, engine bay, arches, sills, door shuts etc. then remove the paint on the bodywork yourself. I prefer to use a rotary polisher with a Velcro interface pad and 80 grit DA discs, leaving the very last of the paint to remove with a DA sander. but obviously try not to generate too much heat in the panel.

@hannakournikova I think there is a place in Carrick that does it? I've them liked on facebook, I will post the name if I find them.

Rust Busters always come with a thumbs up from me. They are very knowledgeable on the subject and very honest. They should be able to give you a steer either way.

As @pedenjohn mentioned the coating left by the Soda "can" react over time.

Likewise with dipping the shell, can you be 100% sure all of the acid is gone and there are no remnants left within any box sections for example?

That does remind me, NK Coatings may take on a shell, as they don't tend to have any interest in the smaller jobs... An alternative to blasting.

Totally agree. I get quite a few parts blasted and was looking for a delicate level of media or glass bead blasting. Rust Busters came up trumps and I continue to use them.

Had shells dipped in England.
Absolutely fantastic job. But as you say, hard to tell what's left in the voids and cavities.
An e-type I'm involved with was dipped then washed, then e-coated. All metalwork was then carried out and it will go back to be e-coated again before it comes home.
Expensive? Yes, very, but in the case of the e-type, worth it.

The water blasting does look like it has potential....but as has been said, how good any system is will always be down the muppet using it.

Although it's hard to think water blasting a shell to remove all paint/rust etc...is a good start to ensuring a rust free future, with all that water on a bare metal shell lol.

True, but I think one advantage is the dust or lack of when blasting with water and media.

I do agree on a shell though.
