As above, what are the options and rough prices if anyone has had it done?
Rustbusters - go for the soda - about £450-500 from memory
CM Blasting in downpatrick/crossgar direction - he is mobile but does a fantastic job - about £350 for a complete car inside/out/underneath
would you get the blaster to put a coat of primer on the bare tin?
Think it be best. Bare metal will rust while ya stand looking at it. Quicker you get a coat on it the better.
i think its less to do with the type of blasting, rather the skill of the person doing it, probably taking longer, using finer material and hence costing more. rather than someone who blasts gates.
I think id decide what to do depending on the car and the job your looking to do. If its something high end, id spend the money and have it done by someone who is skilled and can guarantee their work. If its a lower value car, your handy and prepared to spend 2-3 days on it, id have someone/anyone cheap blast the floors, engine bay, arches, sills, door shuts etc. then remove the paint on the bodywork yourself. I prefer to use a rotary polisher with a Velcro interface pad and 80 grit DA discs, leaving the very last of the paint to remove with a DA sander. but obviously try not to generate too much heat in the panel.
@hannakournikova I think there is a place in Carrick that does it? I've them liked on facebook, I will post the name if I find them.
Rust Busters always come with a thumbs up from me. They are very knowledgeable on the subject and very honest. They should be able to give you a steer either way.
As @pedenjohn mentioned the coating left by the Soda "can" react over time.
Likewise with dipping the shell, can you be 100% sure all of the acid is gone and there are no remnants left within any box sections for example?
That does remind me, NK Coatings may take on a shell, as they don't tend to have any interest in the smaller jobs... An alternative to blasting.
They all show paint removal and some surface corrosion, not sure how effective they really are at rust removal though ?
I need this done myself, anyone use anyone recomended yet?
