I don't really want to get into a debate about what way police resources should be best deployed.

Everyone has their own differing opinions on this (including me), and are entitled to it.

As much as I would like to reduce drugs offences/violent crime/burglaries/antisocial behaviour/vandalism in many areas, I chose to be a traffic officer.

That's what I do. I can't speak on behalf of CID, Drugs Squad, Neighbourhood Policing etc on how they do their jobs or why they aren't effective in some areas.

What I can say is that more folk are killed on the roads than any other type of crime, and that the devastation left behind just one of these incidents is enough to justify dedicated teams to try to reduce & prevent them.

I'm quite happy to discuss the way we in RPU do things & why, but as for the other facets of policing - you'd need to speak with those officers tasked with dealing with those issues.

I can appreciate where you are coming form and my comment wasnt directed at you dude in any shape or form.

Road accidents may cause more deaths per year but the pyschological and physical damage done to both the user and the people they are in contact with is huge!!! Its also a huge drain on resources in the health and education service - the ammount of paper work, specialist meetings, etc etc etc we have to use is unreal. To see how this drug use/abuse effects some of these kids is unreal...this is before we get onto some of the environments in which these kids are raised!!

As a motorist and tax payer i still feel that we are too easy a touch for government....

What you are saying there Rybo is spot on(y). I'm sure what you do is a tough job. Dealing with car accidents, deaths on the road and the public in general.

I'd just don't understand why my number plate being half and inch shorter on the sides and a little bit taken of the top and bottom effects anyone that much. I know it's the law and all that but I just think it's kind of silly. It's just how I feel about it.

Google ANPR and see how effective it is in reducing crime.

Nowadays the majority of criminals use vehicles. With the end of the 'troubles' and the following reduction in police/army checkpoints & numbers of officers, criminals are finding it easier to operate & move around undetected. Until ANPR.

To avoid being flagged up on the many ANPR units constntly reading plates, they either have to change their vehicles on a regular basis (whole lot of hassle) or put on false plates (risky - too easy detected, ANPR). They could also alter their reg so ANPR can't read it. And so that eyewitnesses to crime, or a vehicle making off from a crime can't easily read it. Just one of the reasons why police take number plates seriously.

Looking at the other side of the coin - why do non-criminals want to alter standard plates?

No-one has put forward any sensible reasons other than "It looks better".

I don't think this argument is likely to win over politicians to change the law.

Ther are many other ways to modify & improve the look of your car. Leave the plates alone.

BTW if you allow any latitude on the size eg 65mm high instead of 79mm, people will push it to 60, 55 & so on & bleat about how their plate is only a wee bit smaller & how unfair it all is that they got a ticket. Leave the plates alone!!

I saw a lovely plate this morning driving past me. Was on a brand new Modern Tyre Service Van - T4r35 obviously trying to say TYRES. Might not have been those exact characters but it was very close. I'm sure they will be getting stopped very soon(y):p

So you're a non-criminal if we change our plates?:p

So if my plates are legally spaced, standard height, but a little more bold will the ANPR machine go nuts....resulting in a fine?

Career criminals often 'alter' plates to commit offences, your still committing an offence if you alter your numberplate whether your a career criminal or not.

They are only doing a job at the end of the day. They don't make up the rules. I would doubt they all have that attitude. A couple of my friends are in the Police and they aren't like that at all.

I don't anyone is saying that people the streets will be a safer place if everyone has legal number plates. That's just being silly now.(y)

What makes you say that the RUC was alot more constructive? Have you got a reason beind this?

It's basically cuz the RUC weren't constricted by as many legislations or human rights as the PSNI. It's like saying the old coco pops were much nicer than the new ones, but they're not allowed to use milk chocolate anymore.

there is always gonna be a mass debate over this, tbh i agree wit the guys here that a slighlty smaller/bolder plate looks great on the car but speaking from experience its not worth the hassel..at the end of the day the police hav a job to do and the law is the law...

i know for a fact you know NOTHIN about either the PSNI or the RUC. & as for a waste of tax payers money, is that not people like you? who do bugger all the whole day and live off the government? the police are actually out doing something, whilst your lying in your bed all day.

alot of my family members are in the police and also have a few friends in it and i've seen how hard they work. yes fair enuff some of them can be prats, being honest, but the majority are fine, your just raging cos you always seem to be in trouble with them ryanmx5boy. maybe if you where a bit politer to them and wised the hell up you'd see a different side.

if your polite & treat them with respect or whatver you will get the same back. but no ones gonna be nice to some jumped up 18 year old who thinks hes the dogs danglies.

Oh Fiesty!!

True though, some people have no respect for others carrying out their job, it doesn't matter if they are Cops, cleaners, bin men, or any other employment. Manners are free.
