Thing is I haven’t been overly precious about it. But Sunday was brutal, I couldn’t leave it all day. Lack of respect was just unbelievable, I certainly won’t be back at it.

I took the forester to the first jccni and was lucky enough to get selected to be inside. The amount of people trying g to open the doors to climb/look inside was unreal. After that I was very selected about any shows and mainly just went on runs instead.

Have to say I love this car and would love to have a proper go in a well sorted car such as this but at 6'4 and 19.5st I'm not sure that's possible

I think it's a very NI and Ireland thing tbh. I go to the likes of Rollhard and Players Classic in England have no bother whatsoever even leaving windows done and nothing touched.

The way the seats are in this one I'd say you'd fit in no bother at all. Saying that me, Jayme and a full tank of fuel at the weekend was bothering the arches 😂

Many Things.
Thing is I haven’t been overly precious about it..

Why would you not be? The hours, effort, money, etc that you and anyone spends on there pride and joy gives you the right to be particular and minnions that have no manners and no respect need to be put in there place.

I haven't been at a show in years and by the sounds of it I'm glad I haven't if this is peoples attitudes.

your only a wee lad compared to me then, add another few stone on. I just built the car to suit me. No point having it if you cant drive it.

Only thing that makes it uncomfortable is the noise and next to no suspension

needless to say they will be getting blacked out and of course they also need some big cams to add the extra spice. I'm really pleased with how the car drives and goes atm but next year I want it to be a bit more of an animal, so needless to say there will be winter " refinements"

Thanks for looking

So car made an appearance at the weekend for wedding duties, was wet on the way to get it on the Sunday and yet the smile was ear to ear driving it to the cottages we stayed in. Ar1’s and rain made an entertaining combo.

And of course, couldn’t pass up on the opportunity for a photo in the fancy suit

Couldn’t have not had @cauld1 e34 there. Amazing what a few mates can fire together in sheds

Yesterday saw mini mag hit the shelves , was surprised to find it in Galway so would have been rude not to grab a copy for lunch time reading

Such a cool car 😎 saw it at Eurotreffen over the summer. Always had a soft spot for classic mini's since my ex-fiance bought her Cooper swapped Mini Mayfair. Would still love one some day

Suppose it’s time for a bit of an update, since October I’ve not looked at the car other than to give it a start and let it tick over. With work being really full on and spending a fair chunk of the year so far in Reading from Monday to Friday the appetite hasn’t been there to do much.

Well last Sunday I rolled it out and washed it for the first time in 2023, after standing back it gave me a bit of motivation to start into it for its “winter upgrades”

AB71D38F-8739-4259-9C42-9F0CAF26A9C2.jpeg

Staring with the new itbs I decided to give them a test fit to see if I needed to re jig the loom or if we ran into any clearance issues

Base plate on to show the difference of old vs new

And all fitted up , few things need looked at but I’m well happy with the difference of them. They are bigger internally and are maybe 30/35mm longer so there will be a marginal gain overall. Ultimately whenever I’m fitting more aggressive cams I’m going to have the head opened up and the inlet plate blended into it for maximum flow.

66C3172A-D7A4-4911-84D5-984C7E3BB64A.jpeg

As good as they look with no filter I checked the fitment of it also, I was half expecting the bonnet to have fitment issues but thankfully with the itbs having an updraft it pushes it into where the room is.

2E77E821-2041-4803-9B9C-AC7C96823894.jpeg

And one last photo because they just look so right

3918ED81-7290-4F44-9C28-59EC4E01E0F5.jpeg

Next up I had been hunting for a new final drive , my gear set has a slightly longer 1st and when paired with my 3.2 it’s near endless, from memory it’s pulling 65/70 in first. 3.6 appears to be a sweet pairing with the 16v setup, downside is cruising speed will now be at approx 4000rpm, the upside is it should add to the go fairly noticeable. Engine has to come out to do this so at the time I’m going to have the engine pay re-painted.

14193252-B6B0-409F-BF1D-43857371DF98.jpeg

Other changes this year are improvements to the upper engine steady, it’s clear that I’m getting some movement and there ideally needs to be none. KAD make a bracket that bolts into the crossmember, with the aid of some spreader plates this should leave me with a fairly solid setup.

03334060-3236-46AA-8245-9A228D9ED4EB.jpeg

I have plenty more to update this year, for now I just need the time to get on with it. Really looking forward to the summer , I’m super keen to make a trip to either Rollhard or fitted and just generally drive it more. Last year was very much a test year and I’m fairly confident with some minor tweaks it’s going to be the making of the car

Cheers for looking

Not tempted to do a 5speed then it would give you the best of both?

Not really, to start with your into massive coin, plus they have been known to be weak. If I’d to sink that much into a gearbox I’d fit a dog box set and have change left for other goodies.

No real reason for 1-4 to be any weaker, maybe the 5th is when overdiven, but if you're just using it for an overdrive, it's a no brainer ( cost aside )

In fact, 1-3, as 4 just locks main shaft so is always strongest regardless.

Looks like there are options for that style, or a kit with 5th gear as the 1:1, so no overdrive as such. That is bound to make gears weaker prior to that with space limitations etc.

Googling, some of the prices seem quite reasonable.

So it happened again… I went to fit an engine steady and the engine fell out, spanner must have undone every bolt on the way down, you couldn’t write it.

Although a slight inconvenience that makes it easier to sort the rear oil drains out of the head. This one got to me as after it got up to temps you used to see oil dripping out the return manifold, I personally think that a lack of a barb where you fit the pipe onto and really poor flange clamping force between it and the gasket was the main cause so it will be an evening to spend on the laptop drawing up something more compact and fit for purpose.

When the engine was out I had to do some welding, biggest issue I was having was keeping the top engine plate tight to hold it from allowing the engine to rock. Solution was to swap to a KAD mount and strengthen the crossmember to suit

69CF1C8B-73A1-4A0B-A4F3-3D56685EB3A4.jpeg

And at that stage it needed the engine bay painted, just the engine bay, nothing else, because we are not going down the rabbit hole.

After a look around the car some other early signs where starting to show and just like that the rest is history,

Anyone wanting paint done I highly recommend James at JS Automotive in Ballymena. I haven’t saw the car yet but I can’t wait. Was so many little corners and things that annoyed me on the last paint job. He was also able to address some door fitment issues I had on the drivers door.

When that was happening I got busy at home. I noticed that I had some odd marks on the front shocks, turns out the shock body had been rubbing slightly on the subframe. Some research showed this as an issue others had encountered. Out came the grinder, I cut out the contact are and plated it back in. Welded it on the outside and managed to get a few stitches in the back for a bit of extra strength.

When we were that far into it the frame needed refinished so off it went to IC powdercoat and now I’m left with this lot of which half has gone to cerakote. Leaving me the smaller bits to clean up and paint at home .

C13AD7A9-C63F-446E-B9EB-DC4EB0640177.jpeg

All going to plan I will have the shell back after the first weekend in June. And then it’s time to get the diff ratio swapped out and clean up the engine. I have the itbs stripped to refinish and the engine loom has already got some alterations. Junes going to be very busy, we are moving into our new house and this has to get finished.

Just don’t know how to tell the wife she has to buy her toaster and kettle out of Asda as I’ve spent all the money again….

Wish me luck

I pity your wallet when we're at Rollhard and your wife gets dropped off to Bicester Village 😜😂

It's looking great and even better that it's not taking years to go back together!

Great stuff, love an A-series-ish engined Mini, lovely job on the paintwork, the external seams are always an issue on the classic mini's unfortunately.

So I have the shell back home. Pressure is on now to get it back on the road to enjoy whatever summer we get.

Last Sunday the entry came back for Rollhard which is an event I’ve been keen to get to for a few years.

Got my subframe and arms back, a mate was able to get the frame powder coated for me and at the same time I had the arms cerakoted. On top of this I’ve tried to take the time to paint as much of the small brackets and mounts that I had left previously, parts that were stainless or zinc plated didn’t hold up at all.

On the to do list is the drive shafts. They are getting a refresh with better quality joints and some Classic mini Japan Hub Nuts and R clips. Have always wanted a set of these and after I fitted their ball joints which do away with the hassle of shims and poor quality parts I knew they were worth the extra money.

I’ve plenty to keep me going this month, moving house , work and of course the rebuild. I’ve a day set aside to swap the diff drive over, I also plan to replace cam seals for better quality items so I’ve made a cam lockout tool to help with that. I’m also hoping to get some fab work done for the breathers on the back of the block to clean all that setup up and refine the engine bay further.

Still pushing to make it out for eurotreffen 1st July, il be honest it’s maybe a week to early but I’ve learned that you need to set tight timeline to get things done. Being to ambitious or holding out for whatever reason leads to 7 years later…

Cheers for looking

Jayme

This thing is awesome. Looks great, love it in the red and the K head looks great in there.

You have clearly put a put a lot of time, effort, money and love at this build and it shows, nice attention to detail and looks right in all areas.

Good luck getting it on the road again asap so you can actually enjoy driving it.
