I got a call from my painter today to say " the shell is done, come and have a look."

The very second I walked into the oven my jaw hit the floor.

My mates son wanted to paint it and boy did he do an outstanding job. No polishing or cutting needed, purely straight out the gun finish.

I absolutely LOVE the colour 😍 so glad I didn't play it safe.

To say I'm delighted is a massive understatement. This car has gone from just a tidy up and paint ice cream machine to something I now have to finish at a level worthy of their paintwork.

What a great way to finish the week 😍.

Doing some final jobs on the engine, used a pushbike cable for the throttle which worked a treat. Scratched my head a bit r.e an air filter for the turbo, found some old weber 48 trumpets made up some rubber sleeve et voila. Moved the dump valve round and it fits with enough room to get a snap on filter ( or pair of tights 🤣) over the top. Still waiting on my parts. As soon as they are here it'll be a couple of days then I can chuck it on the trailer, head to the paintshop an re unite the chassis with the body.

just throw thin mesh over it a lot of the guys running big turbo 20vt seem to do it
Yeah that's what I'm going to do, braze a tea strainer to it. I've never run filters on all my builds, it's to stop anything going in the turbo not for filtration

What’s the reason for no intercooler. I am an air cooled pleb and don’t know anything about the engines but I’m interested to find out why. Did you talk about it earlier in thread if so excuse my ignorance.
I am looking forward to seeing this on the body. It’s an amazing machine.

No intercooler at the minute, I'll run it and see what it's like, to be honest I don't think it needs one, it's such a low power engine anyway that anything over the standard 40bhp will be a bonus 😁

EDIT, I forgot to mention, I built the turbo system whilst the body was at the paintshop, bar a few trips with the tape measure, I've really nothing to reference to, an intercooler may fit, however I'll leave it until the body is on to decide whether or not, if there's even any need to fit one.

Volvo's!
Silly question time - will the heat generated by the turbo effect the overall temp of the engine compartment and thus the engine itself? Or is it likely the turbo just won't be working hard enough to generate extra heat?

Good question. Only one way I'll find out. The engine lid is vented so it will allow the engine bay to breath a little. For sure it will raise temps, remember the Renault 5s used to perculate the fuel back in the day. . It will sit and idle all day long and not get even remotely warm in the garage. However it's only going to show just how hot it gets when it's under load. I do have a spare oil cooler here so can run a secondary one if needs be. I do however want it to be reliable, if not, it'll go on carbs but I'm very much confident that it'll work. Famous last words 😁

Decided to get on with my wheels. They were kerbed, the paint was flaking and water had got under all of the lacquer.
I had to pretty much strip them bare by hand
A coat of etch primer then high build, a few wee bits here and there that need a bit more work but nothing major. They won't be perfect but they'll look good enough for what they are once they have the final colour on them..

Never again, my fingers ar raw, and I've wasted 3 solid days on them.
That's why a refurb specialist is worth every penny.

Meanwhile my wings are done, nearly there for the paint, just bonnet bootlid and doors now.
