without the power of Google - off the top of my quite drunk head, Justin Wilson. did he not do a lot of testing for someone? Williams maybe? before he did a season with jaguar?
or have I totally misunderstood the whole question haha.?
I think Justin Wilson only came back for a quarter season, not a full one.

There's loads of drivers that have gone off to be a test/reserve/third driver and come back for a few races, but the original question Cormac asked was has any driver ever gone off to the doldrums of reserves and managed to come back to a full season again, not just stepped in to replace someone else injured (or crap).

Just looked Wilson up and he did a test or two for Minardi, then was their second driver for 2003, and replaced Pizzonia at Jaguar for the last 5 races. Klien got the Jaguar nod for 04 and that was that.

And yes, here are some better, confirmed, examples (rather than guesses)
Hulkenberg - Williams 2010, Force India reserve 2011, Force India 2011
Luizzi - STR 2007, Force India reserve 2008, 2009, Force India 2010
De la Rosa - Jaguar 2002, McLaren reserve 2003-2009, Sauber 2010 (13/19 races). AND McLaren reserve 2011, HRT 2012
Massa - Sauber 2002, Ferrari reserve 2003, Sauber 2004
Panis - Prost 2000, McLaren reserve 2001, BAR 2001
Heidfeld - BMW Sauber 2009 - McLaren reserve 2010 - Pirelli test driver 2010, Lotus Renault 2011 (although, he didn't finish the season)
Wurz, who I was sure about also didn't finish his return reason - Benetton 2000, McLaren reserve 2001-2006, Williams 2007 (did not finish, retired before last race) [and also then was test driver for Honda, Brawn and Williams].
Here's a good one for you. Badoer - Scuderia Italia 1993, Minardi reserve 1994, Minardi 1995. You thought I was going to mention Ferrari, right? ;)

Great trivia enjoyed reading that!8-|

One thing I've been interested is the work of on-track marshals for driver's in the event of a serious incident.
from the guy that waves the yellow flag , to the marshal first on scene. minor/major crash and everybody has a role to play.
I would like to see F1 coverage do a more in-depth / talk-walk series on how the track marshals/ medics / paramedics/ trauma paramedics work together from start to finish on extracting F1 / multi F1 drivers from F1 cars in the event of heavy collisions..
and what exactly what happens .
Recently I've been watching the Homaltro saftey Crews in Indy car racing and they seem certainly efficient, diverse and very well drilled in the first aid and recovery of drivers on scene requiring immediate traumatic care in a matter of seconds . (Track depending ) but its nothing I've ever seen the bbc/ f1 crews do?
Obviously its not what we want to see nor any driver in any series of any formula a driver being injured and requiring immediate care . But interested to know how they work and what role each persons plays in the event of a major collision.
Maybe they have there own reason for not showing us ??

Alonso will be doing a full season of WEC, as well as his full F1 season, culminating with two shots at LeMans with Toyota.

In the old days it was common for drivers to mix F1 and sports cars. To manage that in this highly specialised modern era is quite a feat. Looking forward to see how he carries it off.

Fernando Alonso: Two-time F1 champion to race at Le Mans in 2018 & 2019

I can't wait to see Alonso in WEC, much better than F1 imo, but I'm not happy Ant Davidson had to step down to fit him in :worried:

In a way Alonso is the luckiest guy out there at the moment - he ended up in the worst car on the grid, and as a result has been given a historic opportunity to race multiple series at the same time. Indy last year (don't be surprised if he gets another shot at that too), and now WEC and Le Mans.

Good on him, if anyone can do it he can (y)

9/11, should have been 10, my gut instinct on number 5 was right but I clicked the wrong one. Number 7 was the other I got wrong, was humming and hah-ing over the right answer and one wrong one and made the wrong choice.
Almost.

I have cancelled Sky sports so will either see the race on channel 4 or the results on my phone.
It has been very boring for years.
