Fivemiletown is a great event. My claim to fame is I won it in 2000 albeit as a sack of potatoes in the passenger seat. Did it a few times with different relatives but never got to drive it myself. The stages are relatively short but are VERY quick in places. Best of luck!!!
Fivemiletown done and dusted. Home in one piece with no damage and some experience of notes under my belt. Had bother in the latter stages with cutting out and not starting when warm. On two stages it happened on the start line waiting on the countdown.
Pinto is now out on the floor, it was fitted in the mid 90s and never been out since so it’s been long over due.
I was never far away and always put on a bit of a show at RSA but I was miles away in the forest. Completely different league. It’s still using cast pistons which is a limiting factor but I’m simply going for a hone, re ring and a tidy up of valve seats, guides and seals. The head is as far skimmed as it can go so there’s no point going mad on it. If I throw £700/£1000 at it now it will leave it in a bit better stead for the next few events/year and I will start to built a new long rod engine for it.
So a bit further on with the engine. Stripped the head and started to check the valves etc. found one valve stem seal completely missing and two bent exhaust valves with all 4 exhaust valves not seating.
4 new stainless valves, new Kent cams low profile valve stem seals and a new set of vs42 valve springs.
Crank is +0.25 but polished up fine so just new bearings required
Block is +1.00 but honed ok so new rings to freshen that up.
New head gasket, bolts and timing belt kit should see us back motoring for a total of £600 plus my time. Not too bad for nearly 20 years of bad manners.
This will be the last refresh for this engine and I will build a new long rod engine. I would hate to blow this up or move too far away from its spec for sentimental reasons more than anything.
Great day out at Maiden City Stages yesterday. Car ran faultlessly and no issues to report thankfully. Finished 2nd in class so happy out. Few improvements to be made for loughgall in July.
