I hate boats so driving is my preferred option. Would hate to break something major over there and trying to arrange transport home. I can remember a crowd from uklegacy going over and one blowing an engine and the insurance wrote it off so they had to abandon it after it was stripped of anything of value and another rubbing the wall at Spa and catching fire further on round the lap. That's my kind if luck right there

But Cooper mentioned there would be a bar on the ferry :grinning: lol

Yeah it would be the nightmare scenario. I try to avoid watching such clips on YouTube haha

On that note, to the guys who have been before, what about insurance??

What kinda dosh is that? Was looking at the hungaroring as I'm an RBR fan, but the RB 3 corner weekend ticket I wanted was already sold out. I will have to look at that tour, could be an option!

It’s not the cheapest at 2800, but I got the early bird deal at 2500. I’m sure if you explained you were having to get the ferry across the Irish Sea they’d do you a good deal. Some nice hotels booked along the way an all, and some cracking cars going on it!

Jayysusss! That's an akropovic system for the bm, or a cruise if the woman was to find out lol.
Is that price for 1 car and accom for 2? How many nights is that?

Yes that’s car and 2 people plus eurotunnel crossing. Think it’s either 5 or 6 nights, nice hotels and a trackday in England somewhere on return. Was also given another trackday in Wales I think it was as part of it but I’m at work so can’t make it.
Then at the end of it we’re going our own way to Luxembourg and Belgium for a few days to relax after all the driving!

Most of the details are here:
Circuit Days - Alpine Adventure

It's actually not bad I suppose if my passenger was to pay say a grand of it and I payed 1500. I had planned a grand tour something like this a few years ago but nothing came of it.
Do you have any details handy about the track day back in England?
Also red bull ring is meant to be a nightmare to get in and out of on the Sunday :/

I'm not sure what it's like for private track days, but I'd be pretty sure that none of the standard UK motor insurers will insure you on the Nurburgring when you're there for Touristenfahrten. Check your own insurance. It'll probably specifically exclude the Nurburgring or say something like it excludes un-restricted toll roads. You might find a specialist track day insurer who will only cover you for damage to your own vehicle, but I doubt you'll find someone to cover you for damage to the track or injuring other people.

You don't want to even think about what could happen if you were to drop fluids on the Nurburgring in front of a few cars, or bikers 8o| Pretty much my biggest nightmare.

Pretty much my biggest nightmare.

Mine too! Yeah I'm pretty sure admiral won't cover me. I know a guy went on bikes a few years ago, said it was mental, that cars would near push him of the track.

I presume most people just say a prayer, chance it and hope for the best when it comes to insurance?

Something else I never thought of is a spare wheel, I've got none :/ just a ****ty blow up kit, gonna have to search for one of them!

Yeah I'm not sure how the traffic is going to work getting to and from the circuit!

No details on which track it will be yet but they do a lot of trackdays at all the main circuits over there. Will try and get across as it'll be a nice chance to get around somewhere other than Kirkistown, providing the Mini makes it back in one piece!

It might seem obvious to some, but buying a games console and doing laps in the virtual world would be an easy way to learn the track if you dont know it.

I've done so many laps in Forza that all of the corners are burned into my memory now.

I've read reviews of people saying your better to get something to eat and have a good dander round after to let the crowd thin out.
I'd be pushing it to get back over for another track day maybe .

Yeah Forza will be purchased. I've an Xbox one there and it's like new, will have to get Forza for it again .

doin dome Forza hotlaps now on the Ring...

I'm gonna have to buy it soon!

Got 1 definite and 2 maybes so far to join the trip. Gonna give it few more weeks and then I'm booking it up.

Started making a list of stuff to bring along with me;
Spare wheel and jack
Selection of basic tools
Top up oil
Phone mounts (top of list maybe lol)

Anybody any advice on other stuff they brought or wish they'd brought?

Obviously will be trying to make sure the car is in top mechanical order. Might possibly make a wee thread on her if I end up buying shiny go faster bits for her

I'd bring a set of brake pads and any tools required to fit them after having to pay €140 for a set of rear pads for my Clio. They were around £30 from a dealer over here I found out on my return.

If there is a group of you going a set of cheap walkie talkie radios from Argos is also very handy.

Yeah car is due a brake service atm, gonna get some motul or castrol fluid for it I think. Was considering putting braided lines on, just for fact I've never had them and everyone says you can feel a difference in the pedal. Was thinking of replacing the pads before I go as they're about 50% worn atm, surely the 'rings not that sore on them! Think ill stick some yellow EBC ones in it, not forking out £500 for Pagids!!

Yeah rodger that, walkie talkies are a must!!

I was at the ring mid september 2016 for three days of touristenfahrten. First evening the track closed after 10mins due to the bmw ring taxi crashing of all things. Second day was wet at the foxhole but dry at the karoussell. So made for a mixed effort lap. Final day was the saturday. Would say it was busy but not overcrowded. There was maybe 3 hours of the whole day where there were no incidents on track but also a single incident that closed the track for a couple of hours due to an oil spill. We got to the track just after 8am on the saturdayand the track was covered in heavy fog and was quite damp. It passed over by noon and was perfect conditions after that.

Also, as mentioned above, i cannot stress the importance of having good brakes. I upgraded the discs pads and fluid to brembo kit before i went and it still wasnt enough. Overheating the brakes led to a very horrible experience and a huge dissappointment. Managed a 10minute lap with horrendous brake warp and fade. Would have been amazing to have gone quicker if they were working well.

But not the significant camber of the track and the elevation changes affecting the balance of the car under braking.

Regards insurance, if you are booked on any organised trackday your package generally includes insurance.
Drive on a TF session and it's a public road therefore you are responsible under german law for any damages caused whether that be a section of barrier, track closure time or a multi car pile up due to a bust hose etc. There are only a handful of UK companies who will cover you, but be prepared for the price. Oh and look very closely at the excesses:dizzy:

I would confidently say that i learnt the track from doing many many laps on Forza and watching many many videos and interviews on youtube. I knew how my car was going to react when driven fast etc. I was as prepared as I could be. There was only one part of the entire track that caught me out at first, galgenkopf, the second to last corner on a btg lap. Its not a particularly tight corner and leads into the final corner along dottinger-hohe which lures you into it flat out. Problem there is the bump across the corner at the apex which will easily lighten the back axle and cause a spin if your not careful.

But then, if your going for the first time and you think you know the track enough to go hell for leather straight out of the gate you are an idiot. Always do a couple of slow sighting laps first. It was on the slow sighting lap that my brother nearly crashed the car after all. The muppet.

Also, i thoroughly recommend doing an organised track day instead of touristenfahrten. Motorbikes and cars just dont belong on the same track and i paid £220-ish for a single days insurance on a public session.

I will be getting Forza for definite but obviously a few sighting laps are a must!
I'm think of going the weekend of the Belgium Grand Prix in August. Was originally gonna go Hull to Rotterdam ferry but found quite a cheap route if you sacrifice sleep the day you go lol.
Going by Dublin to Hollyhead and then eurotunnel I've got it priced for a car, driver and passenger for £210pp return, which is ****ing cheap! Considering doing Fri, Sat and Sunday morning at the ring, leaving Sunday round 11am and head for Spa, F1 start around 3pm .then drive on to Brussels to stay the Sunday night to make it a shorter journey home on the Monday.

If anybody whos been before has tips or any '''must sees" let me know!

Trying to gather up more men to go now just!
