Many brave pills required for an E60 M5

There was a big thread on PH recently bout a guy whos V10 went pop and the warranty company walked away. Ultimately, he challenged them and ended up winning
Was a v8 one was it not?

You can spin a bearing of an S54 or an S50, it happens, and the price for a rebuild could and often does exceed 6k. It’s just one of those things and it’s the price you pay for driving something that isn’t boring as ****.

So it’s not just the e60 M5 that has issues, if you want one, just buy one and enjoy.

Imo with most performance/luxury cars most of the problems later in life come from **** maintenance.

Yes there are exceptions and yes there are horror stories that get repeated ad finitum across forums. But later it life with these sort of cars, spend the proper money doing preventative maintenance (not cheap) and you can avoid a lot of the issues.

They can throw up massive bills regardless of maintenance but the likelihood is a lot lower if they’re looked after and they tend to be very complex and cost a fortune from new to begin with.

I am getting an unhealthy desire for a V10, within a suitable budget. Thinking M5 but the stories are putting me off a bit. Anyone shine any light on the situation? Im not a huge audi fan either but could be swayed.

Any current E60 M5 or RS6 owners on here?

If you want that raw V10 noise like the M5 then stick with an M5 or possibly as linked an S6/S8 as they're the 5.2 N/A V10s, I heard one on my way to Wicklow with a set of pipes one day and that made my mind up to stick pipes on my RS6!

The RS6 is the choice if you want an easy enough to drive wagon with AWD and stupidly easy tuneability! Although like the M5 the are a few common issues which can be costly if not previously resolved, and in this cars case it's not a matter of impeccable maintenance as the cars engine bay just gets too hot and rubber seals start to perish.

In saying that I enjoy mine a crazy amount, having not been in it for several weeks, getting back into it today is like a sense of euphoria, it's immense!

The e60 has been throwing up those problems from they were about a year old.

At the end of the day it’s a 200mph 500bhp saloon car. They are epic but just don’t be surprised if it throws up a bill of a few grand.

Also @dddrrift if you want a spin in mine I'll happily take you out to help decide. There are very few V10 RS6's in the North or south, under 10 if I'm to believe what I've been told, maybe even 5.

An uncle had one from brand new which gave plenty of bother even then...
Is It worth the risk/cost/worry/hassle given how cheap the F10 M5 is now??

im not feeling the new generation BMW engines at all, iv only had a few and none were performance models but they seemed a bit lifeless.

I want that v10 noise bad! lol theres just something special about them!

@quattro Rick thats extremely kind of you to offer, and i may well take you up on that, i had sat on the fence with audi to date but i could be swayed!

your thread scares me though, i dont want to be pulling a v10 out anytime soon!lol

Bit of a more relaxed option but don’t forget the Audi S8 V10 either

Had a good chat with Colm about actuators and bearing on an E90 M3 the other day, also discussed E60 as there was 1 outside. To be honest the costs involved wouldn’t put me off.

Is the SMG just as problematic in them or is it not as common?

Wtf, from a V10 beast to a diesel taxi albeit torquey one.

And E60’s aren’t a taxi of choice around Belfast...? Maybe they’re too old and outdated to still be used as taxis actually?

The rs6s are quick but I think the turbos stifle the sound a bit. This s6 is utter porn.

No doubt the S6/S8 sounds incredible, if you see above I mentioned hearing one with pipes forcing me to get some myself.

The turbos definitely muffle that raw noise, but then the old 5 cylinder turbos sounded magical going round rally stages. They're slightly different but the same kind of. NA will definitely scream more though

I would say go for it! I bought a v10 m6 1 year ago, 1500 miles done and no problems. After its warmed up well I drive it hard and enjoy every minute, I have a full bmw warranty with £250 excess its £780 per year

That’s not bad at all. Does the warranty cover everything? Any special conditions for it? That’s similar mileage to what I would do

If you really want one get one with a full bmw history and a warranty. Only way to go if you plan to keep it. Looked at them myself but £2k a year for a warranty is steep when it sits in the garage most of the time.
Absolute beast when everything is working.

When I had my M6 the warranty from Prentices was 600 something, so not too bad at all.

I only kept it for a year and still regret selling it sometimes. I had a LCI facelift, so it didn't come with the same impending doom of SMG failure, but it still worried me a little at the back of my mind. I sold it also for something more fun, they are an amazing machine, but way too easily driven compared to something smaller, manual, less luxurious and without 500NM of torque at the press of the pedal.

I'd have it back tomorrow, though:eyes:
