unhealthy desire for a v10... M5?

I think SMG boxes are subjective to be honest, in full auto any I've driven have been utter crap.

Driving them the way they're meant to be driven I'm not sure, there are definitely good and bad ones (E46 M3s seem to suffer from this than E60 m5's). Any I've driven I've not pushed too far as they're not mine. I appreciate what they are, but I'd also prefer something less clunky day to day.
Ok, pretend it’s September 2004, when the press first got to see the E60, and it’s a first ever 7 speed flappy paddle gearbox dotted to any car, let alone a family saloon !

Clunky, it’s not working right if it’s ‘clunky’

Tbh the DCT box in my current car probably annoys me more than the SMG ever did

The YouTube channel Hoovies Garage bought an M5 V10 and they specialise in buying below par cars and fixing them up a bit. They said the M5 was the most unreliable and expensive to fix. That’s compared with Rolls Royce, Aston’s and Maseratis that he has done. For me I’d never be able to relax driving the thing.

This whole SMG gearbox thing kills me, and I know I’m not the only one.

It gets such bad press but the reality is what
it is designed to do it does remarkably well, it’s NOT an auto, nor is it supposed to be !
It’s a manual gearbox with with no clutch pedal, you need to drive exactly as that and lift slight between changes etc just as you would in a full blown manual.
Between my CSL & my E60 M5 I never had any issues or problems with the gearboxes and also on the American forums they used to rant and rave about the manual box, you know with 6 gears not 7 🤦‍♂️
These engines were designed to work with 7 ratios and the SMG box, if it’s rough it needs to be recalibrated and the bite point adjusted and then honestly imo it’s a joy

This takes a bit getting used to and also defeated the purpose of not having a manual for me, as in an auto I can cruise away and not think about what gear the car wants to be in, but in the SMG you have to remain slightly aware and lift as you mention, otherwise it could jerk a little or even give a squeak from the SMG pump.

However, when driving enthusiastically the box really became alive, it ran so much smoother during a B road blast than it ever did driving sedately on the same road.

Love this video of a supercharged one by Ricky from LLF, an RMS favourite. Pretty sure it's not a 5.2? That sound with an Eisenmann exhaust though!

The gearbox breaks at the end lol.

That's me told then haha. Like I said, I found that there were 'good' and 'bad' SMG boxes, but in full auto mode they were horrible, though they likely aren't meant to be driven that way admittedly.

Sorry, didn’t mean it like that 🤦‍♂️
I honestly think they are not bad at all, honestly I get more frustrated with a DCT box than I ever did with my SMG ones. Like you say though, I’m sure they are not all the same, bound to be plenty out there needing a recalibration

I'd love to have a proper go in one, as any I've driven haven't been my own car so never wanted to drive it like I would if I owned it.

I’m keeping my anti-DSG type comments to myself. I’ve learnt you aren’t allowed to favour a manual on RMS.
I’ve never had a VAG car so never tried DSG, I’d actually like to, probably only to realise how much BMW screwed up lol

Spotted this today if your still in the market for one. It’s had all the important maintenance work done.

seen that, looks nice but I fancy a change from silver, as stupid as that sounds, black or Silverstone for me! That's strong money also!

Probably as clean as they come, this things genuinely stunning inside and out in every way. Properly well cared for example.

Would still break your wallet if you looked at it the wrong way though. Would love a m5 touring 😬
