I can't wait to see this, do you have a complete build and test day timescale, or just when it's done, it's done?

At this stage, it will just be built when its built G!

But putting it together after paint should not be difficult really and providing I have the shell back around Halloween there is no reason why it won't be eventing in 2020.

At the moment trying to locate someone with BMW Motorsport Engine building experience?

Has anyone any suggestions? Would prefer to find someone locally.

Ralph Jess has built a few neat BMW race cars, as you know. I'm not sure how far advanced the engines were, however.

Don't forget about me when your likely down this way testing.

Cheers, recovery a hell of a lot slower than hoped, seems the affects of the brain damage won't get much better. I'm still here however and get to see the weans all day, every day, so I guess I can't complain much lol

Is that like a red primer or did the blasters lay down a base coat? I'm sure it's great to see it all in one colour at last!

Great project, no corners being cut there

That does not sound good Graham, hopefully further recovery time and help from the Melters you will be back to yourself in no Time :grinning:

Yeah, its an Epoxy Primer tinted with Red, Blairs requested it was done that way! Trying not to cut corners at this stage, I dont want to be doing rust repairs again in the future!

Looking really well there! Genuinely look forward to updates on this thread.

Tinted primers, and even tinted stonechip, are becoming more popular. The inevitable stone chips will be barely noticeable.

Thats great work. Good choice going with tinted primer, I'll be doing the same with mine.

Who did the blasting?

Great choice with the G4+, does a great job in mine.

Yes, I’m going with tinted stone hip underneath to give it some kind stonechip, grippy slick tyres are fierce for causing stone rash!!

Hi Ian,

The blast & Prime was done by a chap in Cullybackey, Alan Harkness Blast cleaning, very obliging and had it done for me in 4days. Would certainly use him again.

Moved over to Link from the DTA, initially to find a system that could run quad vanos and a mapper in this country but they have nothing that could suppose the vanos so I’ve decided again to ditch It and bought some Schrick Race Cams which will be set and locked manually.

That primer looks good enough as it is

It looks better from a distance 8o|

Took abit of the Break from the TR for about a month, due to a Big push on the MG Midget.

Thankfully it is around 80% finished now :grinning: but another season of Racing has Come and Gone.

IMG_0991.jpg

On the BMW engine, I spent some time mounting up the Dry sump System, alternator and Cleaning down the block.

Although the Engine has the same basic Layout, the Crankshaft PCD was Different and the Pump mount needed Redesigned to lift it for Steering Linkage and Rack Clearance.

IMG_1233.jpg

Measured up for Belts and Installed - This Time I have reinstalled the Harmonic Damper behind the main pulley, this helps balance the engine, and probably shouldn't have been done away with on the last engine.

IMG_1136.jpg

Schrick Cams Arrived - so Engine will be going to a builder shortly to the Cams to be installed, Vanos Removed - Planning to use TDP in Wicklow.

While its with TDP, I will have Big End bearings done & ARP bolts installed across the bottom end.. Might also upgrade to Solid Lifters in the top end so I can withstand higher Revs if Required.

I have also started to strip and prepare some parts for Powder Coating, May as well have everything ready to install once the shell come back.

Starting with the Axle and Back end Parts -

End Caps to Omit the PC from the Bearing Carrier.

Also on the back Burner is a new Set of lightweight Split rims. Compomotive have stopped producing the ML1310 wheel so I'm building a set of Image RN4 which look similar to the classic 4spoke revolution.

These will be for Competition / Slicks

Rear 13" x 11.5"
Front 13" x 9"

I've been gathering a few sets of classic splits from the 80/90's over the last few years.

IMG_2512.jpg

These are 4x108PCD but for a standard M12x1.5 wheel stud, so the centres are going to the machine shop to be modified to accept Grp4 fitment

Will keep the updates coming Over the next few weeks...

Some Sub-Assembles getting ready for refitting, Had not really planned to Refurb everything but sure why not at this stage.

Axle returned from Powder Coating, guys where bit rough with it and damaged the End Caps i'd made so shot crept into the Axle.

Abit of a pain as I had to strip the Diff and wash the whole thing out with Petrol, Dropped the axle twice & the Petrol reacted slightly with the powder coating, but got there in the End.

IMG_1377.jpeg

IMG_1379.jpeg

Next up where the 4 Link, Watts linkage & Gearbox mount

Powder Coat gets everywhere so it was a matter of cleaning all the threads with a Tap, mating faces & Inside Bush Sleeves

IMG_1397.jpeg

IMG_1448.jpeg

IMG_1447.jpeg

Front Subframe also got a Lick so I gave the Front Arms & Steering Rack a Tidy too..

IMG_1489.jpeg

IMG_1490.jpeg

Fuel Tank Cradle Ready for fitting

IMG_1452.jpeg

Also Received a Batch of Parts back from Anodising which allowed me to overhaul the front struts..

So That Pretty much readies all the parts to leave it rolling after paint....

Focus in the meantime will now shift to the Engine and Gearbox to prepare it for installation...

Would stay well clear of TDP.

Did you have a bad experience with them? I know of a few competition cars they have built and mapped that have been reliable.

I know of a few competition cars they’ve built or mapped that get properly pasted at events year after year..

- Davy Francis 2x 650/700hp Cossie Escorts
- McBennetts N/A & Charged S/Charge Lotus Hondas
- Robert Morgan’s Pilbeam 2.8 Millington
- Gerard O’Connells Smith & Jones 600hp MK2

It’s always the horror stories you hear!
