Yeah just called them there.
That is the case. Ah well.
He said I could submit a V33 and apply for a refund but it would be a bit of a scummy thing to do. Don't think the new owner would appreciate that letter dropping into his mailbox saying that his tax disc is now invalid!

i got my v5 yesterday. took just under 2 weeks.

Funny enough mine came yesterday too. I actually called the local post office yesterday morning and the guy told me that I could tax it there no problems if I brought the green new keeper slip if I hadn't received the new tax book yet.

Yeah he says a V33 is an application for a tax disc refund with no disc present.

There is a £7 charge in this case.

He said that didn't matter as I had paid for the tax disc initially.

It's all academic though as I'm not going to fleece the guy for the sake of £140 odd.

If the tax had been refunded automatically I'd have kept schtum until he contacted me.

Doubt they would inform him. Bought my current car with 2 months tax left on it. When it came round to renewal the girl on the phone said i owed back payments, turns out the previous owner claimed it back without telling me...asked them should they not have informed me as how would i have known the tax was claimed back.....said they don't have an obligation to write out to say ^o)

Quick question , I might be buying a vehicle today that is taxed till April, does that mean cause it's before the deadline the tax stays with me? Or will we loose the tax next week?

Direct debit payments will only be available for tax disks starting November 1, however you can set up a direct debit online from October 1, or October 5 from your local Post Office.

Paper tax discs

From October 1 2014, you are free to remove your tax disc from your windscreen, however we recommend you keep it in a safe place in case of any confusion or complications when the new system comes into place.

Taxing your vehicle

There are still have a number of options for taxing your vehicle.

With effect from October 1, you can set up a direct debit to pay for your Vehicle tax automatically. This will give you the option of paying every six months, every 12 months or in monthly installments.

Direct debit payments will only be available for tax disks starting November 1, however you can set up a direct debit online from October 1, or October 5 from your local Post Office.

You can set up a direct debit online, or at your local post office. There is also the option of paying for your tax online.

If there are no tax discs to be displayed, how will the DVLA know I have taxed my vehicle?

Under the new system, you can check your tax renewal date online. Police and the DVLA will carry out database checks to ensure all vehicles requiring tax are up to date on their payments.

As well as database checks, traffic cameras equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition will cross reference number plates against untaxed vehicles. As under the current scheme, those driving an untaxed vehicle will be fined up to £1,000.

When your tax renewal is due, you will receive a reminder by post, detailing how you can renew and the cost of renewal.

Selling your car

When selling your vehicle, you must notify the DVLA and you will be given an automatic refund for any full months remaining on your tax disc. For example, if you tax disc expires on March 31, and you sell your car on February 3, you would receive a refund for one month's worth of tax.

In the past, the seller would have had to apply for the tax refund. Under the new scheme, the refund will be issued automatically.

Buying a car

If you're buying a second hand car, then the vehicle tax does not transfer with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can legally use it.

You can do this when you register yourself as the car's new owner with the DVLA, by filling out a 'New Keeper Supplement.' If you prefer you can do so online at theDVLA's website. or by calling the DVLA on: 0300 123 4321.

Does this mean if I sell my vehicle mid-way through the month, both myself and the new owner will pay a full month's tax?

Yes, unfortunately because you only get a refund for any full months remaining on your tax disc, both yourself and the new owner will pay for the full month's worth of tax.

SORN vehicles

If your vehicle is registered as off the road (also known as SORN) will receive an automatic refund for any full remaining tax months.

Anyone know what the craic is with the mot disc? Do we need to keep them up?

Also, I wonder how this will work down south. Last time I was down a Guard at a checkpoint checked my car was taxed.

From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle. If you have a tax disc with any months left to run after this date, then it can be removed from the vehicle and destroyed. This includes customers with a Northern Ireland address, however they will still need to display their MoT disc.

:grinning:(y)
