Well, the old engine is already out, a few bolts and some hoses and the new one should be in, how hard can it be :innocent:

March OTD might be pushing it, should probably do a shakedown at k-town first, check maps etc., following @evo98 's experience. But who knows :grinning:

Im sure you could hire kirkistown for an hour just to check the map an adjust it if needs be.. What date is the march otd? I might join you on that. Im not on backroads that often but I enjoyed there other days

7 March, Friday after next - go on Jonny, you can do it :p :innocent:

The next Trackskills is 23 March, and 13 April, more likely debut at one of them I would say. Closer as well for the tow truck when it blows up :p

Then Mondello and OTD at their next outing again, which will be 16 May.

Been away, time to catch up with some updates. Progress has been steady, and relentless, even without me around to provide helpful advice :grinning:

This was my poor little Princess a week ago:

Is that the shiny, pristine, untouched, printed and laminated manual I spy there? :p :innocent:
HondaElise12.JPG

Forward to Monday, and the full damage to the little Rover was revealed - quite impressive! Piston completely evaporated, gone, as if hit by a Romulan disruptor!

By yesterday, the Honda engine and gearbox were out of the Civic and in bits in Jonny's garage.

Jonny was particularly proud of this arrangement for cracking open the engine :grinning:

The new Quaiffe diff ready to go in:

The Honda gearbox inside out :grinning:

Which brings us up to date. Popped up today to check on things, and bring up some more bits and pieces.

The Honda engine:

New timing chain, water pump etc.:

The remains of the car... Soon to be filled with new joy :grinning:

Blasted and powder coated sump and rocker cover.

That is all for now, got to run!

Yes, very happy the way this is progressing. One thing at a time, no drama (y)

One well used little Rover, lol, the piston just evaporated - do everything properly as mum always said :innocent: @Colin will be in tears!

But it died well, doing what it was meant to do :grinning: Onwards and up!

Another quick update of the progress this week.

To the pile we have added: new knock sensor, new inertia cut-off sensor, hardware for connecting the oil cooler (take-off plate, remote filter header, etc.), new throttle cable, the list goes on. But more shiny new bits is always good, even if it can be painful on the wallet :grinning:

Oh, and a somewhat essential clutch link-up pipe is missing. Chasing that down with James, who supplies the kit. But in fairness, that has been the only real issue so far, which is not bad after all.

And so to the update :grinning: Engine and gearbox are in; gearlinkage connected up; driveshafts and suspension all rebuilt and put back together. Main things left: fuelling, electrics, exhaust, sorting out the oil cooler, and general tidy up.

Is that the pristine and untouched printed and laminated manual I spy there? :innocent: And unpainted engine block - sloppy :p
P1040345.JPG

Loads of room! Oh, and the top of that head cover needs painted too :innocent: The roll-over hoop is getting the POR-15 treatment down where it bolts to the aluminium chassis, to stop more corrosion.
P1040348.JPG

New custom driveshafts in, and the suspension put back together again.
P1040349.JPG

Aluminium corrosion from the riv-nuts holding the shell in place. You could actually see daylight around the old ones, they were that bad... So Jonny got himself a new riv-gun and replaced the lot - the little details matter.
P1040352.JPG

The gearlinkage - a fiendish contraption that somehow works... Well, Jonny says it does, I take his word for it for now :grinning:
P1040354.JPG

Jonny was particularly proud of the coolant arrangement, which apparently required a bit of clever ingenuity :grinning: The oil cooler is hiding somewhere down there as well.
P1040355.JPG

The gearlinkage from inside the cabin, more fiendishness here. Note the cable running down the centre of the tunnel. Then note the size of the nut holding it in place. Then imagine trying to adjust that linkage and tighten that nut. Jonny was ecstatic, lol :grinning:
P1040360.JPG

Another view of the whole thing, in all its glory - beautiful! :grinning:
P1040362.JPG

So, what could possibly go wrong now

Yes, going very well :grinning: A bit of moaning from Jonny, but you would expect that, lol :p Just one thing at a time, working through it all and sorting things out as they come.

There have been a few things needing adjusting/adapting/modifying to fit, but you kind of would expect that for something like this, nothing major really.

The RBC fits the engine alright, machined and ready by Tegiwa, just bolt on. But not enough room for it in the engine bay :sob:

Glad to see it all coming together for you Nick! Shame the RBC didn't fit, I believe these really open the K20 up.

We got a load of bits for the Laminova oil cooler installation - take-off plate, remote oil filter header, connectors, etc. - from Think Automotive over in England, and then got hoses made up at Pirtek in Mallusk.

The Honda has a little "mini oil cooler" between the engine and the filter, which needs to go to make more room (and not needed anyway with the Laminova). The oil filter, and hence take-off plate, are M20, but the engine side of the "mini cooler" is M22. So the lads at Think Automotive made up an M20/M22 stepper bolt for us, FOC. Nice! Talked to them yesterday afternoon, and it arrived in the post today. Now that is customer service (y)

Also got the new inertia switch (Jonny broke the old one :p ) from Lotus, and found a nice little surprise in that package too :grinning:

The oil take-off on the engine. The little Honda "mini oil cooler" will be going.

The remote oil filter, and some of those shiny new hoses. The Laminova itself ended up on the other side of the bay, sitting on the return pipe from the radiator.
P1040396.JPG

And this turned up in the package from Lotus with the new inertia switch. Nice :grinning:
